Bush, the Younger, managed to turn that around by not getting bin Laden dead or alive for 9/11 but instead opted to take out Saddam because Iraq was doable. Of course in the process of taking out Iraq he eliminated the barrier we now need for Iran. A sort of lose-lose plan.

We went after Saddam as he was torturing and gassing his own people; he was going to cause supply disruptions to world oil markets to cripple the West; and he was funneling money to terrorists.
