Why is Hawaii typed or spelled Hawaii???? Twice?? An attempt to get the pronunciation closer to the way the Hawaiians say it. Sort of like the change in spelling of Bombay to Mumbai.
I work with a guy from there, an old guy, he's Indian not British, although I think, like BHO, he was born a British subject, but he doesn't like the change.

Hawai’i is how the name is spelled in the Hawaiian language. The apostrophe indicates a glottal stop, like “uh-oh.” You often see the two spellings interchanged.
