I keep thinking of this comic strip.

Somebody should update it with a message appropriate for this stupid professor.

The neighbor who was looking out for him is being harassed big time. She should put up a sign declaring that from now on, when she sees anyone breaking into the professor's house, she won't call the police, or try to interfere in any way.

The police should issue a similar statement.

It looks like this guy’s house is ripe for the pickings... there is no way a cop is going to respond to calls there now.

I doubt the skilled race pimp, Harvard Prof would need to go all ‘street’ otherwise.

Deflection - - "Hey, look at me! Ignore that other guy!" - - Exactly.

Cambridge Police spokesman Jimmy DiFrancesco tells me the department is looking into who leaked the Henry Louis Gates police report to the media. “We’re in the process of seeing where it came from,” said DiFrancesco.

That is exactly why my television is OFF and my Internet connection is on.

The Internet puts out the real stuff, television is totally controlled manipulated and choreographed.

If the gentleman had responded like a normal adult to the Officer's request for identification and shown it, rather than lapsing into a tantrum fit of verbal abuse upon the Police officer,he would not have been arrested. The only racial profiling here is in the mind of the arrestee.

React to a police officer in the manner of a street punk, he will treat you like one.

This is only one side of the story, and cops are trained how to write arrest reports in a way that puts the arrestee in the worst possible light.

What are you talking about?

The President of the United States just called these law officers stupid, and implied white cops in America are racist, on prime time television, from the White House no less.

You're right: the police report is just one side of the story. Also, I think you raise good points about what the grounds are for being arrested on your own property. What I think is outrageous is that the POTUS would take sides in this type of dispute, even as he concedes he doesn't know the facts and one of the parties is a buddy of his. Instead of asserting that Gates is a jerk and a race-baiter, I should have said that I think Obama is a jerk and a race-baiter.

it would have sent the message to the crowd that you can brazenly slur an on-duty cop in public anytime you feel like it.

I think you can. Hasn't there been a SCOTUS ruling affirming that?

Did anyone here bother to read Gates account of the incident or is the word of a govenrment official sufficient to come to an opinion? Here it is in case anyone cares about the word of a citizen:

"Statement on Behalf of Henry Louis Gates, Jr. -- by Charles Ogletree

This brief statement is being submitted on behalf of my client, friend, and colleague, Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. This is a statement concerning the arrest of Professor Gates. On July 16, 2009, Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., 58, the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor of Harvard University, was headed from Logan airport to his home [in] Cambridge after spending a week in China, where he was filming his new PBS documentary entitled “Faces of America.” Professor Gates was driven to his home by a driver for a local car company. Professor Gates attempted to enter his front door, but the door was damaged. Professor Gates then entered his rear door with his key, turned off his alarm, and again attempted to open the front door. With the help of his driver they were able to force the front door open, and then the driver carried Professor Gates’ luggage into his home.

Professor Gates immediately called the Harvard Real Estate office to report the damage to his door and requested that it be repaired immediately. As he was talking to the Harvard Real Estate office on his portable phone in his house, he observed a uniformed officer on his front porch. When Professor Gates opened the door, the officer immediately asked him to step outside. Professor Gates remained inside his home and asked the officer why he was there. The officer indicated that he was responding to a 911 call about a breaking and entering in progress at this address. Professor Gates informed the officer that he lived there and was a faculty member at Harvard University. The officer then asked Professor Gates whether he could prove that he lived there and taught at Harvard. Professor Gates said that he could, and turned to walk into his kitchen, where he had left his wallet. The officer followed him. Professor Gates handed both his Harvard University identification and his valid Massachusetts driver’s license to the officer. Both include Professor Gates’ photograph, and the license includes his address.

Professor Gates then asked the police officer if he would give him his name and his badge number. He made this request several times. The officer did not produce any identification nor did he respond to Professor Gates’ request for this information. After an additional request by Professor Gates for the officer’s name and badge number, the officer then turned and left the kitchen of Professor Gates’ home without ever acknowledging who he was or if there were charges against Professor Gates. As Professor Gates followed the officer to his own front door, he was astonished to see several police officers gathered on his front porch. Professor Gates asked the officer’s colleagues for his name and badge number. As Professor Gates stepped onto his front porch, the officer who had been inside and who had examined his identification, said to him, “Thank you for accommodating my earlier request,” and then placed Professor Gates under arrest. He was handcuffed on his own front porch.

Professor Gates was taken to the Cambridge Police Station where he remained for approximately 4 hours before being released that evening. Professor Gates’ counsel has been cooperating with the Middlesex District Attorneys Office, and the City of Cambridge, and is hopeful that this matter will be resolved promptly. Professor Gates will not be making any other statements concerning this matter at this time."

Also, I think you raise good points about what the grounds are for being arrested on your own property.

This really isn't really the issue here.

All the President did was fan the fires of racial tensions. This was no mistake, or accident.

The question and response was totally scripted and orchestrated.

This issue here is he should have never commented on this, then after pulling the race card, he implies all white cops are racist.

The President of the United States stated he was biased and connected to Mr. Gates....AND then went on to comment before knowing all the facts, AND then went on to lash out at ALL law enforcement, implying or suggesting they pull over Latino and Blacks for no damn reason at all.

This is insane, and has totally embolden every common criminal in the U.S., be it Black or Hispanic...

He should have stopped when he stated, "I know this guy, I am biased" So "No comment"...End of story.

This guy just broadcasted to all Blacks and Hispanics in the U.S. that cops are racist, and they will pull you over for no reason at all.

If you believe that version, you'll believe anything.

That version basically stated the man was arrested for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

No sale.

I agree with you. What I meant is that the fact that I think Gates is a jerk is not the issue. The POTUS should not have commented on this case.

He not only commented, he used the White House and prime time television to keep strained race relations in this country alive.

He did nothing but fan racial flames.

And this is *exactly* what Obama's motive was here.

Ogletree is so full of baloney. He’s another race baiter who would be thrilled if he got arrested so he could complain about it for years to come.
Ogletree goes around in Cambridge looking at apartments in Cambridge hoping to get turned down so he can sue for discrimination. He has someone call first to make an appointment and then shows up with witnesses.

Ya think CNN will put up this report, and have their dozen or so beauty queens read and discuss this?

LOL

I doubt CNN will do that, but I don't think they need to. Gates himself will do it all by himself because this report is going to follow him everywhere. He's his own worst enemy right now.

Remember what Khalil Gibran once said: Reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to it's own destruction

When Gates finally provided his ID it could have ended there, but instead the scumbag followed the officer outside and slurred him in plain view and earshot of the gathering crowd. The cop would have looked guilty of racism (as well as like a pansy) if he had just walked away from the scumbag and it would have sent the message to the crowd that you can brazenly slur an on-duty cop in public anytime you feel like it.

The cop was left with no choice but to arrest the scumbag, IMO.

I think that's exactly what happened. But who pressured them to drop the charges? Who was on the other end of that phone line that Gates was using?
