Brazilian Formula One driver Felipe Massa was fighting for his life tonight following a crash during a qualifying session that knocked him unconscious. Massa was airlifted to hospital where surgeons operated on him to treat a fracture to his skull.

The Ferrari driver ran over a piece of debris, thought to be a spring, on the track during the qualification session for the Hungarian F1 Grand Prix in Mogyorod near Budapest, Hungary.

Terrible news. Reminds me of Ayrton Senna.

I was watching qualifying when this happened. A spring came off Barichelo’s car and hit Massa in the helmet. He lost control and just went straight ahead. He finally came too, hit brakes but didn’t appear to try to turn steering wheel. He hit tire barrier straight on. Prayers for Felipe.

The debris, thought to be a spring, is pictured here just moments before it struck Felipe Massa on the head as he drove at about 175mph

The car part, thought to be from fellow racer Rubens Barrichello's car, hurtles towards Massa during a qualifying session for the Hungarian F1 Grand Prix.

Just before impact, as Massa would have been driving at about 175mph

Yes, it was a spring that came out of Rubens Barrichello's car.

Oh God. Prayers for Felipe. He is a good kid.

I had heard it was not that bad. Rubens Barrichello must be devastated.

It looks like it bounced off the left front of the helmet thankfully just above the visor. They said he has a fractured skull. Get well Felipe.

Former World Champion John Surtees young son (19 years old?) Henry died last week in a Formula 2 accident due to a head injury with a tire.

That was tragic. I saw films of this. It just "bopped" him on the head. That's a lot of weight at speed. Poor kid did not have a chance.

He looked like a very nice young man - just tragic. I like Surtees. He is always thoughtful when interviewed. Stirling Moss on the other hand has always been a bit arrogant.

snip from Massa in life-threatening condition after surgery

.. in “satisfactory condition” after emergency surgery. The hospital said in a statement the Ferrari driver would be kept in intensive care overnight.

Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni said the driver’s state was “positive.”
