Your sequence is correct in that the Gov. can appt a temp replacement to hold office until the elected replacement is determined via a special election on May 8, 2010. That temp can also run for the elected position in the special election if he/she so chooses.

Michael Williams would be an excellent choice. I’m also intrigued by his fellow Railroad Commissioner Elizabeth Jones, though I don’t know a lot about her.

I love how the RRC has nothing to do with Railroads anymore.

Also how the democrats would love the current composition of the commission (hispanic guy, black guy, white woman) if they all weren’t Republicans that is. Hahaha.

Williams sounds like he gets it.

I wish a third candidate would jump into the Governor’s race, almost certain it won’t happen. I hate to have to back the mediocre Perry by default.

KBH could throw her Senate seat to the Democrat John Sharp, former comptroller. That would give the Democrats 61 seats.

Do you see Williams beating the Democrat John Sharp?

John Sharp only kept it close in his 2002 Lt. Gov. run because the Democrats were running Hispanic and black “loss-leaders” for Gov. and Senator, respectively. (Democrats run minority candidates in the South so that they increase minority turnout and help white Anglo candidates win.) If Williams and Sharp are the two candidates in the run-off, Sharp won’t have any black or Hispanic Democrat on the ballot with him and I don’t think he can win among the voters that would turn out in the run-off.

I think that (i) Houston Mayor White is the likeliest Democrat to make the run-off and (ii) our biggest threat to losing the seat is if so many Republicans run that White and Sharp finish one-two with 20% and 18% in the all-party “jungle primary” (and thus a Democrat would be guaranteed to win the run-off).
