WASHINGTON — Democrats have pushed sweeping health care legislation through a key congressional committee, clearing the way for a September showdown on President Barack Obama's top domestic priority.
The 31-28 vote Friday came after majority Democrats on the Energy and Commerce Committee agreed to a last-minute series of changes including limiting how much health insurance companies can raise premiums.
The changes were made to placate liberal Democrats — who rebelled after a deal was struck earlier in the week with conservative Democrats.
Energy and Commerce was the last of three House committees to act on the health bill. The vote came on the last day of the House's session before its annual summer recess, sending Democrats home with some momentum on health care.

WASHINGTON (AP) — After a bruising struggle, Democrats pushed sweeping health care legislation to the brink of passage in a key congressional committee on Friday, clearing the way for a September showdown in the House on President Barack Obama's top domestic priority.
As part of a last-minute series of changes, the Energy and Commerce Committee agreed to limit increases in the cost of insurance sold under the bill, and also to give the federal government authority to negotiate directly with drug companies for lower prices under Medicare.
The new provisions were part of an intensive effort Democrats have made in recent days to satisfy the conflicting demands of liberals and conservatives on the panel. "We have agreed we need to pull together," said Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., the committee chairman.
The measure is designed to extend health insurance to millions who now lack it, at the same time it strives to slow the growth in medical costs nationwid.

If you mean democrat senators or representatives I am betting you are right because they already have top notch insurance paid for by the government. If you mean democrats in general I am sure your wrong because liberals like my daughter (I still cant believe I said that) dont trust insurance companies at all. After her previous insurance was canceled and she couldnt get a new policy because of preexisting conditions she jumped right on the obamacare bandwagon. She keeps comapring this public option thing to medicare and says that if it is good enough for me it should be good enough for her. I dont know how to answer that.
First, explain to her that there isn't enough money to provide "free" health care to every American. Show her Canada and Great Britain as examples.
I am from the UK and have lived the health care which bozo wants.
Here is some facts
my mother went to get checked for cancer, from the day of going to getting her results.
nearly 11 months and her husband died during that time from cancer
My mother had to wait for 3 years to have varicose vein surgery.
A friend broke his knee, and it was days before they could put him in a cast.
My mother got rushed if you can call it that to hospital this year.she's 78.
Over two hours for the ambulance to come.
In the hospitals you do not get a nice room like here.
You get a ward with 15 other women, one small TV in the corner of the ward, No phone , no privacy but a curtain when the Doc comes round.
There was no Doc on the ward at weekends due to money shortages.
Hospitals have had to close down due to there being no money.
Nurse and Docs are in sort supply so the UK has had to reach to other countries for them. Most of these new nurses cannot understand the local English and Docs have been coming in saying they got their degree over in their old country but time and time again some have been found out that they were never Doc;’s in the first place.
You will wait for up to 8 weeks to see your family Doc if you get sick and if you do not have a Doc the waiting list to get one is every ling and can take a great deal of time to get a Doc.
Many people in the UK are going abroad as my friend did and many are getting private insurance.
I could go on and on about the health care but I can assure you that national health care will destroy health care as we know it.
Ask your daughter is she prepared to wait for weeks to see a Doc?
Is she happy that it will the Govt telling her which Doc to see and will she look forward to hours and hours to see a Doc even in emergency plus have her taxes go right up.
Remember health care is not free.
Taxes pay for health care and millions of illegals will now be in line for this health care in front of your daughter.
Yes those who have not paid for it will receive it and your daughter will be waiting weeks to get medical care.
There is a reason why the UK has a high rate of cancer deaths and high taxes.
I would suggest for your daughter and others like her to go and talk to those of us who have lived under this health care and go to the UK , Canada to experience it.
I guarantee that she in 4 years will be fuming at health care if this passes.
Imagine Medicare with over night 10 million people signing up for it, illegals.
Can you imagine how the waiting will go and imagine how this will paid off.

She was not English and therefore she never payed for the health care.Nor did she have a NHS number which is required so how did she use it if you don't mind me asking?
Even the UK Govt admits the health care is in a crisis and yet you say your daughter likes it.

As waiting lists to see her GP are extremely long so this doesn't make sense if she had a GP plus how did she go about with a NHS number?

Try having a broken bone and told to wait for days before you can have a cast on it.

Try staying a a ward with no privacy and 15 other women, no phone no nothing

I will agree that health care needs to be addressed and it needs to be tweaked but not changed like the Uk health care.

This is what I know, Having lived in both countries and having both health cares then Americas is far better. Shame those who are trying to pass this bill will not take the health care and have not lived with national health care. As you say you are on Medicare then I would be very worried as Medicare will be cut because of this and you will be waiting much longer behind the millions of illegals. I have given you personal experiences on what the health care is like in the UK.
You can use them to her but I have a feeling that no matter how many times I give these facts they will never be much thought of sadly.
I have had this conversation with many left wing sheep who say hey you are English , wow you get free health care that is great.
Actually when I say it is not free and tell them that the health care is awful in the UK they look at me and shrug their shoulders.
