In Lowell, Mass. my grandparents always called it "tonic", never soda or pop. Didn't matter if it was Coke, 7Up, or whatever. And milkshakes were frappes.
And they also had this great product in stores called Zar-Ex, which was basically kool-ade, but it was a syrup. Just add water!
