It sounds technical, but was a big deal to the British and Kenyans that at the time Kenya was a "dominion." By mid-century "dominion" had come to mean a self-governing state whose head of state was the British monarch, that is they were still part of the monarchy even though self-governing. India pointedly rejected dominion status on independence. The major dominions were Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa after Indian independence, although South Africa later dropped the status and Canada no longer uses the term while remaining part of the monarchy. Although Australia was a "dominion" in this sense, it called itself a "Commonwealth."
A dominion has a resident head of state in the form of a governor or governor-general appointed by the monarch when the British monarch is not resident. A republic, in contrast, has a president as head of state.
It was therefore a very big deal when Kenya became a republic on December 12, 1964. Kenya dropped dominion status and became a republic because it terminated it's status as part of the British monarchy and fully repatriated it's sovereignty. They would not have been imprecise about their status.
