Senate Committee Apologizes to All Native Americans for Violence and Maltreatment by U.S. Citizens

The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs passed a resolution by voice vote last week apologizing "on behalf of American people" to all Indian tribes for the mistreatment and violence by American citizens.

Senate Joint Resolution 14, sponsored by Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), states that its purpose is “to acknowledge a long history of official depredations and ill-conceived policies by the Federal Government regarding Indian Tribes and offer an apology to all Native Peoples on behalf of the United States.”

In Section 1A, No. 4 of the resolution states that the apology is on behalf of U.S. citizens for harm they have done to “Native Peoples.” In the resolution, native peoples are defined as people who “inhabited the land of the present-day United States since time immemorial and for thousands of years before the arrival of people of European descent.”

“Apologizes on behalf of the people of the United States to all Native Peoples for the many instances of violence, maltreatment, and neglect inflicted on Native Peoples by citizens of the United States,” the resolution reads.

Requests by CNSNews.com for clarification of the language in the bill were not answered by Brownback’s office by press time, but Brownback issued a statement on Friday about the passage of his resolution.

“I am pleased that my colleagues have decided to move forward with a formal apology from the federal government to Native Americans," Brownback said. "This is a resolution of apology and reconciliation, and is a step toward healing divisive wounds.

“With this resolution we have the potential to start a new era of positive relations between tribal governments and the federal government,” Brownback said.

“For too much of our history, federal-tribal relations have been marked by broken treaties, mistreatment and dishonorable dealings. With this resolution, we can acknowledge past failures, express sincere regrets and establish a brighter future for all Americans,” he added.

Neither Brownback’s statement nor the resolution says whether the apology is on behalf of U.S. citizens who are alive today or U.S. citizens who lived in the past.

Co-sponsors of the resolution were Sens. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.),Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.), Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.).

When will the Black Caucus apologize TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE for 13% of the population being responsible for over 50% of the crime; for taxpayers having to support a 70% rate of children born out of wedlock and on the public dole? The black, acting-president has done a lot of apologizing on the behalf of white Americans, so I’m just curious about the upcoming apology schedule for his “post-racial” highness.

So it was your Germanic ancestors who helped destroy ancient civilization which thrust Europe into the Dark Ages and allowed Islam to spread.

But it was the Romans who mistreated the Goth refugees until they rioted and ended up tearing down the infrastructure of the Empire. So the Roman Empire better apologize to those Goths for making them mad.

Please somebody crop a picture of some depressed kids in black clothes together with some fat guys in togas!

As and American citizen with ndn blood, I may be looking at this with more disturbed eyes. It appears to me as just another attempt to further demonize American Citizens.

The apology is not for what the U.S. Government (past Presidents and Congress) has done to the tribes. The Terrorist acts of mass slaughters and attempted genocide; stealing land through murder and deception; breaking Government Treaties, promises, etc.. Was NOT committed by the ‘American Citizens’. NO. These acts of unmerciful, barbaric, horrors was committed by OUR U.S. GOVERNMENT.

The ‘citizens’ that participated were officials of the Government. They acted upon the LAWS and POLICIES of the GOVERNMENT. These LEGAL, GOVERNMENT FUNDED, acts were of the GOVERNMENT.

By making the apology on behalf of the “U.S. Citizens”, it falsely portrays who the perpetrator was. It also helps to create the image of the U.S. Citizen being a DANGER to others.

This should worry us all.

What is it with all this mea culpa crap from our politicians?

Dem's pandering for votes. I agree with the overall sentiment in this case, but I still know pandering when I see it.

Where's my money! It's all about money and I was wronged and I am entitled! Is it too late for me to implement immigration reform? All you white eyes get the heck off my land! And while you are at it, take all those Spaniards with you!

Yeah, that's the ticket.....

I might add that even though I enjoy the History channel a lot, they are not gospel on the truth. Have you ever watched any of their Bible or Christianity shows? They are really way out there and not biblical at all on their take of things. For instance they act like the Da Vinci code is the real truth.

““Apologizes on behalf of the people of the United States to all Native Peoples for the many instances of violence, maltreatment, and neglect inflicted on Native Peoples by citizens of the United States,” the resolution reads.”

WHAT a bunch of crappola! I am of “native American’ descent.
I don’t need an apology from these leftist race baiters, looking for yet another constituency to push their socialist agenda and continue to keep blacks, hispanics and Indians on the collective reservation/plantation.

Some of those ‘Native Americans’ wanted nothing more than equality, to be AMERICAN, but they were and are ignored.
Enough of this divide and conquer nonsense!

The same mind set that persecuted the Indians (that’s what my ancestors called themselves, so hang the PC) is the SAME mindset that pumps out these divisive resolutions.

About ‘healthcare’....Some Indians were subjected to disease they could not cure, so the forts set up a system to have the Indians come in to get medicine. After a time, the Indian had to agree to give his land over to get more medicine....not unlike the same thing these socialists are doing today. These liberal do gooders do NOT want the ‘native American’ or anyone else to be independent and self reliant...the socialists lose their power if that happens!

BTW, there were PLENTY of WHITE Americans who tried to stop the ethnic cleansing of Indians...Cong. Davey Crockett, Ralph Waldo Emerson, to name just two...THEY have NOTHING to apologize for!

It’s all here:

http://jesusweptanamericanstory.blogspot.com/

This is the story of ALL Americans, where you will learn what becomes of a group of ‘civilized’, educated, independent, Christian people who are not allowed to protect their own borders. It is our history and it is timeless.

Brownback’s an agent of the dark side. He plays the abortion issue like a fiddle, and he talks a good game, but he’s a bad, bad man.”

Exactly...and Coburn...what has happened to him lately...getting lots of $$$$ from those misguided tribes left in Oklahoma???

“The true decline of most tribes is when individual liberty became subservient to the Federal Government. Many of these people had believed also that the uncontrolled influx of foreigners would destroy their culture, which it most often did. There is no apology sufficient to the many different proud peoples who found themselves on the wrong side of the forces of history. The best apology would be to honor current agreements and stay the heck out of their lives. “

Hallelujah!
