Back to school spree: Billionaire, feds give out $175M to aid neediest students around the state

A $200 back-to-school giveaway for needy kids sparked a mad rush for money on the streets of New York on Tuesday.

"It's free money!" said Alecia Rumph, 26, who waited in a Morris Park, Bronx, line 300 people deep for the cash to buy uniforms and book bags for her two kids.

"Thank God for Obama. He's looking out for us."

Thousands of people lined up at banks and check-cashing shops to withdraw the cash that magically appeared on their electronic benefit cards.

Some rushed out because of rumors the money would vanish by the end of the day.

"Rumors, there's always rumors," said Teresa Medina, who waited four hours at a Pay-O-Matic in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, to get $600 for her three teenagers - just in case they were true.

The no-strings-attached money went to families receiving food stamps or welfare.

Every child between 3 and 17 was eligible for $200, which worked out to 813,845 kids across the state - including 498,866 in the city.

What's a non-person?

According to 0bamacare a non-person is an unborn child, a non-government socialized post-birth child or someone older than retirement age, or who is disabled, male, conservative or white.

What I meant to say in my original post was (NON(person-of-color)). ;0)

Throwing more cake crumbs to the peasants, eh?

Why not bring jobs back to the US so people don’t have to live in poverty on the governments largesse?

No to government crumbs! Yes to jobs!

The Obama-Soros Liquor & Check-Cashing Re-investment Act of 2009.

If the money can be used on whatever why the babble about school supplies. Just call it “Free Money” like the people standing in line. I’d love to see August sales charts from the local liquor stores. There are plenty of otherwise liberals that agree no strings attached cash handouts to the poor are an ineffective way to combat poverty. The crazy thing is that if you paid one of these welfare recipients $200 to stand in line for Shakespeare in Park tickets for you they’d accuse you of exploitation but creating long lines at the crummy check-cashing joints is a considered a noble deed.

what happened to 5.00 dollars and a ham sandwich to vote democratic?

Back in the old 1st Ward days in Chicago it was only a beer and a cheap cigar. Now inflation has really taken its toll.

“It’s free money!”

Gosh, if the guy got a job at Burger King he could make almost twice that every week.

"They should have given these folks $212 so they could enjoy a 6-pack of beer after a hard day of shopping for book bags and school uniforms."

That is such an insensitive remark. You should be ashamed.

. Why limit it to beer? Some shoppers might prefer wine.

It won't even come close to covering the increase in cigarette tax for the them and their kids.

It would be interesting to know how many of these kids will still show up without uniforms or book bags or anything else required.

I wonder if the school will even question all these parents who just got a new flat screen on sale at Walmarts and a few cartons of cigarettes.

Call me crazy, but this is a good thing. As long as the parents spend it on the kids.

All the kids upstate balance out racially the kids on welfare in NYC. (Seems some of you are upset about what color the kids are who will have new clothes and shoes.)

$200 per kid is not a whole lot of money. At least the kids can go back to school with a new pair of shoes, one new outfit, and a new backpack.

I remember when Pat Robertson’s organization used to do this for poor kids down south. I sent donations.

Don’t begrudge the children who will benefit from this. The kids didn’t ask to be born, or to be in a welfare family.
