As a Texas native I wasn't real excited about candidate Bush when he ran for President in 2000, but I was impressed and thrilled when he chose Cheney for VP. Then President Bush's reaction to 9/11 cemented my support for him. Looking at the whole 8 years, I am more pleased than displeased with President Bush, but the last few years of his presidency were his worst, particularly on the domestic side.

I will wait for Cheney book before I judge it, but I suspect where he expresses a disagreement with Bush, he will do so in a respectful way. I would be highly surprised if it were anything else.

There are some facts that need to be pointed out:

1. In 1974, George W. Bush was convicted of DUI. Had this come out during the 2000 GOP primary instead of the general campaign, John McCain would likely have been president.

2. During the 2000 GOP primary, John McCain won the state of New Hampshire and headed to South Carolina for a showdown with Bush. In the initial polling, McCain was ahead by 6 points. However, a whisper and robocall telephone campaign was begun about McCain's "illegitimate black child" with a N.Y. prostitute and claims that his wife was a drug addict. The phone campaign, while never proved to be a part of Bush's team (Rove), were later believed to have originated at Bob Jones University--a notorious fundamentalist "Christian" college where interracial dating is forbidden--but where candidate Bush was eager to show up at and give a speech.

3. While it is true that Bush earned an honorable discharge from the U.S. Air National Guard and untrue that he received bad fitness reports from his commanding officer (CBS Reports), it is a fact and he has admitted to having missed several scheduled drills. Also the oath of enlistment for the National Guard is listed here and requires a member to swear an oath to his or hers particular state's Guard...but Bush (fact) did not fulfill the last two years of his Guard duty in Texas but in Alabama--to help a politician's campaign for Congress while John McCain was sweating it out in a North Vietnamese prison.

4. As early as the summer of 2003 Bush was urged by (some civilian and military officials) in the Pentagon to build up the Iraqi force as coalition forces noticed a gradually increasing flurry of attacks on its troops in various regions, especially in the "Sunni Triangle". The initial Iraqi insurgents were supplied by hundreds of weapons caches created prior to the invasion by the conventional Iraqi army and Republican Guard. But Bush, advised by Rumsfeld on a "limited war" strategy, wouldn't commit any more troops; in believing that the war was won, Iraq was headed toward an elected government, and less troops in the country would seem like less of an occupation to the average Iraqi citizen. Consequently the insurgency expanded click here and more and more troop deaths were being reported (I believe a full force would have prevented many of them).

5. Finally, in 2006 Bush took the steps that Gen. David Petraeus and others had outlined...but only after the GOP had taken it on the chin in the mid-term elections and Rumsfeld was fired.

Am I angry about Bush's performance as president? You bet I am...I knew one of the kids that gave his life for his country!
