Cancer-stricken Sen. Kennedy asks Mass. leaders for speedy process to replace him in Congress
The Minneapolis Star Tribune ^ | August 20, 2009 | Glen Johnson

A cancer-stricken Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has asked Massachusetts leaders to change state law to allow a speedy replacement if it becomes necessary for him to surrender his seat, fearing a months-long vacancy would deny Democrats a crucial vote on President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

In a note to Gov. Deval Patrick and other state leaders, Kennedy asked that lawmakers allow the governor to appoint an interim replacement pending election of a successor, to ensure there would not be a period with a vacancy. Currently, the law requires a special election to be held within five months.

"It is vital for this commonwealth to have two voices speaking for the needs of its citizens and two votes in the Senate during the approximately five months between a vacancy and an election," he wrote.

Is it wrong of me to wonder whether he really wrote this letter?

I’m sorry that Kennedy is in such dire straights, but it’s outrageous to change entire appointment and election laws on a whim just because of which party is in control of the process.

“For almost 47 years, I have had the privilege of representing the people of Massachusetts in the United States Senate,” Kennedy wrote in his letter. He added that serving in the Senate “has been — and still is — the greatest honor of my public life.”

What a country! What a job! He’s never worked a day in his life...

First this lump of turd gets the MASS legislature to change the law in case Horseface Kerry won the presidency, to allow for a vote because Romney was governor. Now he wants to change it back so Hugo Chavez Patrick can name his replacement again.

The only decent Kennedy died a few days ago.

Kennedy will be dead very soon.

Yep.
Even immediate access to the very best doctors and surgeons in the world can't keep somebody alive forever. He will never wait in line for Ubamacare with the rest of us, that's for sure.

Look for the rats and (especially) their allies in the rat newsrooms to use Kennedy's death to push healthfare.

Of course, he could simply announce that he intends to resign on a set date, so that the Governor can call for an election.

But that would require him to relinquish power, something he would never do willingly...

I believe he has missed, to date, approximately 270 votes in the Senate, during his illness. How does that give Massachusetts “2 voices” in the Senate? He wants the precess changed in such a way that his wife (or some other anointed) can be appointed and have a longer run until facing election/reelection. Even as he exits, he is mendacious.

Better that he ask his maker for a speedy process to replace him on earth itself.
Rotten, corrupt bastard - a curse upon him and all that kept him in office.

Not fair, he had to work hard for several weeks evading a manslaughter charge, I’d say that was teh one time he really worked at anything.

His entire life has been spent as an arrogant lying murdering elitist phoney and he has done horrible damage to this country. He’s not dead yet so I can say it.

Democrats are evil. The way they have controlled the replacement process is criminal. They might just lose a special election in the current climate. So they will deny the people avote.

What does all this tell you about what they will do with health care?

It would be much simpler for Kennedy to resign effective Sept 30, and the Governor to schedule an election for Oct 1.

Far too simple, apparently.
