My husband was pulled over by an African American police officer who literally cussed my husband out for calling him sir and being disrespectful because he was African American. My husband was almost in tears; thought he was going to jail and he calls every officer sir.

Sir would seem to be completely acceptable. Maybe the officer would have liked it better if he was addressed as “boy.”
