If the government had any intention of actually repaying its debts, the tax base would have to be broadened significantly. More people would have to be paying a higher percentage of income to the government. Lots more people.

Factually incorrect. Freezing spending at current levels for 2-3 years while actively cutting out old spending that is no longer useful linked with a serious overhaul of US Tax and regulatory policies to focus on consumption taxes in place of income taxes would accomplish the same thing without raising taxes.

We do not have a taxing problem in this county, we have a spending problem.

What we should prepare for is the revolution and the thought of MANY traitors swinging from lamp posts

The government will make it illegal to buy or sell gold. What good is gold if it is impossible to sell or barter?

That’s one of my greatest fears about gold. If this happens, the only place to cash in the gold will be out of this country.

Let them enforce it.

“I think it’s very unlikely that there’s a significant disruption to the food supply...”

It would have to be disrupted if fuel increased 10 to 20x over current prices. Who’s going to be able to afford a can of beans for $20?

They will certainly try.

A benevolent government would find a way to make sure that food and fuel -- if nothing else -- were still available to the general population at something like reasonable prices. The population could weather a very tough time for a number of years, so long as they did not starve or freeze.

But since I do not think our government is benevolent, and since I believe our government would actively use a crisis to institute additional social change, I fully expect food and fuel shortages to occur.

There will be no government, period when this happens. Gold will rule, don’t believe the lies ...

I think there could be food shortages and supply problems. However, I think these shortages will mostly be found in our large cities with large welfare populations. As food prices go way up and costs to ship and stock stores many of these stores will be looted. Most store owners will close up shop after their doors and windows are knocked down and I won’t blame them.

See post-Katrina footage for a clue what that will look like. As city governments fold under the stress many essential personnel like police and firefighters are likely to move their families to safety as civil disorder becomes worse. This will lead to further deterioration in cities as they don’t have enough personnel to respond. At some point the rule of law will crumble in some places just as it did after Katrina.

I hope none of this ever happens but I definitely believe it is very possible if our currency falls apart. Even if the gov’t continues to give out checks they will not be worth enough to cover the cost of food assuming inflation takes off.

Exactly. Let the barons flee the country with their gold on their 40 foot speedboats. My heart was so gladdened at the sight of those almost 2 million strong marching through Washington DC. We’ll take the country back, chicken little. You sit on the beach in the Bahamas and cry into your bullion.

We have some gold. I think of it as emergency preparedness, not as a means to protect the savings we have accumulated over our lifetimes.
