One concern I have about owning rural land, is that rural areas will likely be a hotbed of revolution in a worst case scenario. What’s to stop the government from declaring large sections of land as wetlands or sanctuary for some obscure insect and just seize it?

Did you happen to see Shawn Hannity's special from the San Joaquin Valley, California this week? They turned the water off and produced a desert and 40+% unemployment. The whole country will have higher food prices.
It was enough to give anyone nightmares.
