Our people no longer appear capable of rational self government.

I fear the same thing. Politics has become sport, the average American, when he bother to think about politics, simply cheers for his team.

Well said. Beyond this is the ongoing breakdown in morals and ethics. This is the real dilemma our nation faces. Consider the reaction to political lies. The people that lie well are celebrated by many citizens and much of the media. This begs the question...Who can be trusted? I wish I had an answer to that because the only means we have to judge the veracity of potential leadership is their oratory and past history and this has not worked out too well for us over the last twenty years or so.
