You'll have to do your own research, but yes, it was a big part of the scam.

r-12 was and is the best "freon", they had to market an older version of the formula 134a because they couldn't improve r-12 into a better product.

134a sucks, that's why they didn't market it when they had a better product r-12 way back when.
