EDITORIAL: Fox hunting -- The White House targets independent media
The Washington Times ^ | October 15, 2009

Posted on 10/15/2009 7:47:43 AM PDT by kingattax

Let's face it. Fox News runs stories that the Obama administration would rather ignore - from the sleaziness and corruption in the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) to the bizarre views and actions of senior presidential appointees such as Van Jones and Kevin Jennings.

Last weekend, the Obama administration declared war. "We're going to treat [Fox News] the way we would treat an opponent," said Anita Dunn, White House communications director. She claimed, "We don't need to pretend that this is the way that legitimate news organizations behave." The administration has begun using a government blog to regularly attack what it calls "Fox lies."

According to Glenn Beck’s radio show today, Anita Dunn is resigning at the end of the year. He did say he looked into Anita and had found some interesting information about her which will air tonight. I must say, I am curious.

” There is irony in Miss Dunn complaining to the New York Times about Fox News being “an opponent” and that “people who watch Fox News believe it’s the home team.”

It is indeed the home team, at least they are not Anti-American.

One lesson that Democrats must be too stupid to understand, is that “History is written by the Victor”.

The Democrats are going to get steamrolled out of Congress, and as the scandals, the corruption and evil comes to light - it will only get worse for them.

Unfortuately, as Glenn Beck has so aptly pointed out - corruption exists on both sides of the aisle. Where the Republicans are cowards and tolerate it; the Democrats actively cultivate it.

Can you imagine how much worse this country would be, if it weren’t for Patriots like Beck and O’Rielly? We know that the other networks refuse to criticize anything Obama does, how much worse would life be, if Fox didn’t challenge them?

“The administration is not content with attacking critical press. It is boldly proceeding with plans for the Federal Communications Commission to meddle in conservative talk radio. It threatens insurance companies with not being able to participate in federal programs if those companies attempt mildly to warn customers about how new health care legislation will affect them. “

Another very true statement.

Obama is on the verge of total media control. Look how easily the libs took out Rush when he tried to buy into the NFL. If you are a conservative your money is no good. You may get a paycheck from FOX but you won't be able to buy anything with it because the Libs will scream “Racist” and lock you out. Yesterday I laughed at Obama going after Fox. Now that I see how easily he was able to demolish Limbaugh I'm not so sure. All Obama has to do is frighten a few Fox executives that they won't be able to buy their NY City condos or SEC approvals to buy or sell stock and he will have them bowing to his will. If Obama can break Fox it is all over.

OMG

Can you even believe this is coming from the office of the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES???? When we have a war with dozens of brave soldiers DYING every month and a too-low officially stated 10% unemployment rate and crashing dollar...North Korea blows off 5 missiles on the weekend and gets gentler rhetoric from the WH than FOX News?

Mr. Obama walks a dangerous trail famously taken by President Nixon when he attempted to freeze out The Washington Post. That strategy didn't work so well.

However, the difference is that Nixon was a Republican and the Washington Post then and now a Democratic newspaper. So unless there are journalists that actually see that unchallenged government power against a free press is bad no matter which party is in the White House, don't expect a lot of support for Fox.

“A legitimate news organization” hardly describes CBS ABC NBC MSNBC CNN.

They have been working as direct Public Relations firms for NObama for over 3 years.

The Hoax of a President with a Kenyan birth certificate will get found out.

The MSM then will be thinned out as well, IMO.

I am sure that there are republicans that do more than just tolerate corruption and actively participate in it, but I do agree, the democrats have raised corruption to the heights of artistic endeavor.

” Look how easily the libs took out Rush when he tried to buy into the NFL.”

I’m not too sure that Rush didn’t allow that to happen, for two reasons:

1) he didn’t want to be a distraction to the team’s improvement

2) Now he can go after ALL these media outlets for PUNITIVE damages, because he can PROVE it kept him from making money.
They can’t prove he said these things (HE DIDN’T) and now he alone can damage THEM in a way that the rest of us can’t—the pocketbook!

They cannot count on the Black vote this time around and I can’t see the indies who were disgusted with Bush as their biggest motivation coming out either. Throw in the voting done by the people on the Right who sat it out in protest over McCain and the Repub failures and this one could be really messy.

Citizens should band with Fox to "call out" this Administration on such a blatant attack on the First Amendment. Even Thomas Jefferson, who was often attacked by the press of his day, spoke out strongly in its defense. His passion, of course, was defending liberty, unlike that of the current Congress and Administration.

"The press [is] the only tocsin of a nation. [When it] is completely silenced... all means of a general effort [are] taken away." --Thomas Jefferson to Thomas Cooper, Nov 29, 1802. (*) ME 10:341

"Since truth and reason have maintained their ground against false opinions in league with false facts, the press confined to truth needs no other legal restraint. The public judgment will correct false reasonings and opinions on a full hearing of all parties, and no other definite line can be drawn between the inestimable liberty of the press and its demoralizing licentiousness. If there be still improprieties which this rule would not restrain, its supplement must be sought in the censorship of public opinion." --Thomas Jefferson: 2nd Inaugural Address, 1805. ME 3:381

"The functionaries of every government have propensities to command at will the liberty and property of their constituents. There is no safe deposit for these but with the people themselves, nor can they be safe with them without information. Where the press is free, and every man able to read, all is safe." --Thomas Jefferson to Charles Yancey, 1816. ME 14:384

"Our liberty cannot be guarded but by the freedom of the press, nor that be limited without danger of losing it." --Thomas Jefferson to John Jay, 1786.

And, finally, but by no means the entirety of Jefferson's thoughts on the need for freedom of the press, no matter how critical its views:

"No experiment can be more interesting than that we are now trying, and which we trust will end in establishing the fact, that man may be governed by reason and truth. Our first object should therefore be, to leave open to him all the avenues to truth. The most effectual hitherto found, is the freedom of the press. It is, therefore, the first shut up by those who fear the investigation of their actions."

Fox should place this final Jefferson statement on its screen prior to each program as a means of educating the electorate on the role of the press in a free society.

The alphabet networks have dominated interpretation of news for so long that many citizens never have stopped to think that their opinions may have been manipulated in a manner which may not have included a search for truth.
