If she was not under direct threat, she may very well be haunted by that fact the rest of her life, because she could have kept the gun on him while she called the cops, or maybe just wounded him.

Have you ever been the victim of a crime or break in? I have, several times and when it happens to you, you just want the guy dead on the spot. All of your care, concern and feelings of mercy for the guy, go right out the window.
Personally I think every burglar, car thief and mugger should be shot dead on the spot, dragged back to their “home” neighborhood and hung from a lamp post.
That may depend on what kind of rap sheet, if any, the dead guy had...

Killing anything is not particularly pleasurable in itself, even for a hunter or butcher. But there is the offsetting reward of knowing your are providing your family or someone else with food, or ridding the world of a monster that only a bleeding-heart would call a “someone.”
