Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the suspect in the Fort Hood shootings, has not been killed and is in stable condition at a hospital, Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said at a press conference at Fort Hood.

He is in custody at an undisclosed hospital, Cone said.

Col. Ben Danner said that the gunman was shot four times. He said he didn’t know where the man was hit, nor whether all four shots were fired by the same officer.

Cone had earlier said that Hasan was killed in the incident.

Three soldiers taken into custody after the shootings were released, he said. Investigators believe Hasan acted alone.

“Evidence does not suggest this was a terrorist event,” Cone said.

The death toll from the attack remains 12 after another victim died, Cone said.

Jeff Sadosky, a spokesman for U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, said the senator had been told that Hasan was upset about his upcoming deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan.

An AP source said Hasan had received a poor performance evaluation for Army hospital work. Hasan had been a psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years before being transferred to Fort Hood in July, the Associated Press said, citing military officials in Washington.

The suspect, McCaul said, “took a lot of advanced training in shooting.”

McCaul said he also has been told that Hasan had undergone alcohol counseling.

Hasan, 39, is a U.S. citizen whose parents are Palestinians from the West Bank, according to the Washington Post.

In the lead-up to the 6 day war, the west bank Palestinians were encouraged to move to Jordan so they wouldn’t be in the way of the Arab forces. They were assured that once Israel was destroyed they could move back home. When that didn’t work out, Jordan got fed up with the PLO and drove them out in 69-70. So if the family moved here from Jordan in the sixties, Palestinian would be a significant possibility.

Keep in mind that every injury may not be a bullet wound.

Regan was Governor of California at the time. His administration was involved in closing the asylums.

Gets better — Dallas Morning News is reporting:

Officials say Hasan used two handguns, including a semi-automatic, to fire at fellow soldiers. Neither of the guns was military-issue.

Late night update and a bit more info

An Army psychiatrist set to be shipped overseas opened fire at the Fort Hood Army post Thursday, authorities said, a rampage that killed 12 people and left 31 wounded in the worst mass shooting ever at a military base in the United States.

The gunman, first said to have been killed, was wounded but alive in a hospital under military guard, said Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood. He was shot four times, and was on a ventilator and unconscious, according to military officials. “I would say his death is not imminent,” Cone said.

The man was identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a 39-year-old from Virginia.

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the alleged shooter in yesterday's massacre at Fort Hood, played a homeland security advisory role in President Barack Obama's transition into the White House, according to a key university policy institute document.

Waits for those words to be uttered across the air waves of Fox,CNN, MSNBC...

Somehow Hasan was "protected" within even after the red flags were there. Then secures an advisory role....BRING OUR TROOPS HOME, IDIOTS/TRAITORS ARE IN CHARGE!
