White House Leans Toward Sending More Than 30,000 Troops to Afghanistan (despite requests for more)

Officials said President Obama will not announce his decision until after he returns from his upcoming trip to Asia and stressed that no final decision has been made, even in private. But the plan under consideration would represent a middle ground between different requests made from the top commander in Afghanistan.

But the plan under serious consideration would split the difference between troop requests made by Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan. McChrystal had put forward a "high risk" request for only 10,000-15,000 troops, and a "medium risk" request of 40,000-45,000.

so,...the number that Obama will relent is between high-risk and medium risk,....rather than 80,000 troop victory.

Obama must have gained incredible military insight during his days of driving little old ladies to voting boths in south Chicago during his political formative years.

The threat to our country and its troops seem to be within. Gates, Mullen and McCrystal need to all resign rather than be apart of endangering our troops.

YES, but let's see how much courage they have. Sending another 30k is absolutely going to send the anti-wars into a epileptic shock.

Don’t worry. Obama will have a revelation tomorrow after talking to Rahm Emmanuel and decide to deploy and extra 5,000.5 soldiers to Afganistan.

You know, when you think about it, he might be better for Barry if he sends 29,990 troops. That way if he absolutely really needs to use up another 10,000 or so down the line, no one will notice anyway....unless the Taliban have deposed Karzai by then.

Karzai sure hasn’t helped the situation, either. He needs to start stamping out the corruption in the government if he to remain the president.

I should say, either we’re in it to win or we’re out (and face the consequences).

Such brilliant leadership! Just pick an arbitrary number somewhat greater than what the left wants and the minimum needed to ensure victory. The worst of all choices - risking more lives and increasing costs, but not scaling to proper levels to end the conflict on our terms.

Yeah, this issue will be sure to get everyone’s attention off the ISLAMOFASCIST TERRORIST ATTACK THAT OCCURRED ON ONE OF OUR MILITARY INSTALLATIONS AND OFF THE GOVERNMENT CRAMMING SOCIALIZED MEDICINE DOWN OUR THROATS.

“...McChrystal had put forward a “high risk” request for only 10,000-15,000 troops, and a “medium risk” request of 40,000-45,000.”

So, at 30,000, Obama would take the not quite as ‘high’ risk option?

I wish Obama had the brass b*lls of that brave and great General Chuck U Schumer, now a US Senator, who said today about Afghanistan:

“failure is not an option”.

Oops, sorry, got carried away. Senator Chuck U Schumer made that statement in regards to the health care bill passing the Senate.

Never mind. Carry on.

My Army brother had two combat tours in Vietnam. His frst tour was with 25th Infantry Div and second was with Americal division. His assessment was that our troops were not allowed to win — thanks to micro-management (aka dithering)from Washington.

Remember how the CIA was at constant war with Bush, leaking all over DC and trying to discredit him ?

Welcome to the major leagues Obama.

The Pentagon hates you.
