Union Bullies Boy Scout for Dastardly Good Deed 17-year-old's 250 of community service angers Allentown union By TERESA MASTERSON Updated 12:30 PM EST, Tue, Nov 17, 2009

A 17-year-old Boy Scout worked more than 200 hours to clear a path in his local park so that people could enjoy walking and biking along the river.

Bad move Boy Scout. Now grown men who didn’t get around to doing it for a paycheck are after you.

Kevin Anderson, a junior at Southern Lehigh High School, a varsity soccer player and a Boy Scout hoping to get his Eagle Scout badge, spent 250 hours over several weeks creating a path on the partially complete 165-mile Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor that runs through Kimmets Lock Park in Allentown, reports The Morning Call.

"I decided to do my part in completing this part of the trail. In that way, others could enjoy walking along the river, without having to walk on the busy road," Anderson said in an e-mail, says The Morning Call.

But once the city’s municipal union caught wind of this do-gooder breath of fresh air, it put up a stink at Tuesday’s city council meeting. Nick Balzano, president of the local Service Employees International Unions said its considering filing a grievance against the city for allowing such good, free-of-charge, work to happen.

"We'll be looking into the Cub Scout or Boy Scout who did the trails," Balzano told the council, reports The Morning Call.

He talked about it last night on the TV show, since he was doing a piece on the thuggery that is SEIU.

It would be sweet if the kid’s family had higher connections to the mafia than does this punk Balzano.

Balzano would be delivering cannolis to the kid’s parents along with his apology. And probably sending his guys over to cut the lawn, too.

I’m sure Vito-from-Toledo is on his way, with a ball bat.

Is that not threatening language?

As the father of an Eagle Scout (fortunately not in a union-infested area), I would consider it such and take appropriate action...and maybe some "inappropriate action", too. Threatening kids takes a special kind of low-life scum and it seems the SEIU fully qualifies. Whatever happened to RICO, anyway????

The Boy Scout Eagle Award is thoroughly researched and planned by the kid and his advisor, all documented. The kid would have had to submit plans and get approvals all they way up the line.

It's also a BOY Scout award, not a Cub, that little snarky addition comes off as an insult, to my ears anyway.

“America would be better off without ANY unions whatsoever.”

***

Yup. All my working life, I never belonged to a union. My relationship with the employer was simple: if I do the job well, I get paid; if I louse it up, I get fired. That should be all there is to it.

Every employer I ever had was generous in pay and benefits and when I needed time off (rarely), I could get it without a problem. Be fair with your employer and your employer will be fair to you.

Early on in my trucking career I was an operations supervisor for a major LTL carrier. Dealing with teamsters can be challenging, this was back when Jimmy Hoffa was president of the national teamsters union. Individually, I personally liked many of the teamsters I came into contact with each day. Many were active in their communities volunteering time to be little league baseball coaches, etc.. Collectively, as union members, a certain mind set prevailed ... which was most times counter productive to management trying to maintain efficiency standards. To this day I'm anti-union, any union, teamsters, teachers, pilots, you name it.

“We’ll be looking into the Cub Scout or Boy Scout who did the trails,” Balzano told the council...”

You do that Balzano. Maybe go after Girl Scouts too since they usually do community projects also. In fact Balzano, you might want to send a crew over to the Church to “look into” the nuns -they’re notorious for doing kind acts without being in the union.

I hate unions and the SEIU’s Balzano illustrates perfectly why.

Exactly on point -- the Council Scout Executive needs to become involved immediately to squash this or communities are going to refuse to allow aspiring Eagles to do projects for fear of SEIU scum-thugs seeking retribution.

That sounds like a threat.

I think someone should hold a tea party in the picnic to clean the place up and intimidate the intimidators.

Mr. Balzano would no doubt encourage the Scouts to join an organization more in line with his groups identity. The Young Pioneers.

The only volunteerism that is expected is to join the Obama youth.

My son's Eagle Board is tomorrow night. His project was thoroughly vetted and approved.

I think the SEIU needs to be relocated...like MAYBE TO HELL!

Beat up the Girl Scouts since they sell cookies without a grocery union card.

A Boy Scout refurbished dozens of bus stops for his Eagle Scout project...Unionscum filed a complaint, and the city had to pay the workers who would have been paid if they did the work. These people are evil, an unions should be outlawed.

Sounds like racketeering. Defund the Left. Use RICO.
