Handshake that rattled US Secret Service
Times of India ^ | November 29, 2009

WASHINGTON: This time, the picture is the story. After the Secret Service insisted that US president Barack Obama was never endangered by a security breach that allowed a couple to crash his first state dinner, the White House has released a photo showing that not only did the pair get close to Obama, they actually shook hands and talked to him.

The revelation underscored the seriousness of the security breach and prompted an abject apology from the Secret Service.

A White House spokesman said that the couple, Michaele and Tareq Salahi of Virginia, met and shook hands with the president and the first lady in the receiving line in the Blue Room, as the Obamas greeted each of their 400 invited guests on Tuesday night before moving to a tent on the South Lawn for dinner. That disclosure coincided with a statement from the director of the Secret Service, Mark Sullivan, saying that his agency was “deeply concerned and embarrassed” by the events. Secret Service officials said the agency wanted to interview everyone connected with the episode, including the Salahis, and had not ruled out criminal charges.

Secret Service on Friday acknowledged that its officers never checked whether the two were on the guest list before letting them onto the White House grounds. The Salahis were not on the guest list and should have been barred from entering last Tuesday’s dinner on the White House South Lawn for the Prime Minister of India, said Sullivan.

“Although these individuals went through magnetometers and other levels of screening, they should have been prohibited from entering the event entirely,” Sullivan said. “That failing is ours.”

How did they lie? If they did was it under oath?

IMO the lying to federal agents is bogus. Congress and the Prez lie to us all the time.

So - the Secret Service, charged with protecting the president, doesn’t even check the guest list before allowing people in to a state dinner? That makes no sense and I don’t believe it.

I’m guessing a ceramic blade could have been slipped past the magnetometer. That close to POTUS, and it would have been all over if they wanted to. Not good at all.

What, a handshake is “endangering?”

Listening to Mugabe er,er, Obama makes my skin crawl. Can you imagine if I actually touched him? Great Caesar's Ghost!

This is the first time that the Secret Service is there to protect the masses from the Clown in Chief. It says right here they are doing a pretty poor job of it.

Really this whole thing sounds like a setup for a friendly to Obama TV show.

He seems so pleased to see them.

Remember Obama cried like a baby until he got to keep his Blackberry. I bet he called up or texed Michaele and Tareq Salahi and said come on over I will tell the guy at the gate to let you in.

Can anyone shed light on how it was discovered that these people crashed the party? I missed that part of the story.

From what I've heard she posted pictures on Facebook and some how it was discovered by the press....I know, doesn't make sense but that's the story I heard.

I heard that too, but in addition, her facebook friends started calling the FBI and secret service & reporting the breach / asking if it was true, who then looked at the security tapes and verified that it was true.

After the Secret Service insisted that US president Barack Obama was never endangered by a security breach that allowed a couple to crash his first state dinner,...

Because thankfully they weren't trained agents working for some 'cause.'

More likely they were known to someone high up in 0ba-Mao's administration and given a pass. They seem to be the kind of folks who fit in with BHO and MO.

"The family has been trying to sell the business because, his parents said, Tareq ran it into the ground, piling up as many as 50 creditors and almost $1 million in debt while he was its president.

Among its creditors are the Washington Redskins, for whom Michaele used to be a cheerleader. The couple owes the team $224,000 for season tickets. They also had a $57,000 Carver Mariner yacht, an $80,000 Aston Martin and an Audi that were repossessed.

There is also a $3.5 million fraud suit against the company, plus hundreds of thousands of dollars in credit-card debt and legal fees.

A catering company has sued Tareq Salahi for more than $300,000, claiming he never paid the bill for food for a polo-charity event.

Meanwhile, a purported nonprofit run by the Salahis -- Journey for a Cure, which has claimed to raise millions for research on multiple sclerosis -- was flagged in May by Virginia consumer-affairs officials for failing to apply for tax-exempt status.

Grifters, looters, con artists.

Remember! One can still kill someone with their bare hands in seconds if they're highly trained in such manuevers.

This is a severe breach in security for a sitting President. The Secret Service should be ashamed of themselves.

Exactly right. This is a big problem that needs to be fixed immediately, and access to the president needs to be severely restricted until it is - news of this security breach could encourage nutjobs the world over to start wondering what they might be able to do. Since 9/11, government security agencies have insisted on intruding on our rights and privacy in the name of security - maybe they should spend a little less time poking through the emails and phone calls of ordinary Americans and a little more time making sure that people who walk up to the president at a state dinner are actually invited, screened guests.
