Tense White House exchange(Robert Gibbs calls a White House media reporter a petulant child)
The Yahoo! Newsroom ^ | 12/4/09 | Brett Michael Dykes

Contentious exchanges between White House press secretaries and members of the media have been fairly commonplace during the past few presidential administrations. However, the one that took place Wednesday between White House press secretary Robert Gibbs and April Ryan of American Urban Radio, in which Gibbs essentially compared Ryan to a petulant child, is among the most heated (and entertaining) in recent memory. The testy exchange was sparked by Ryan's insistent questioning of White House social secretary Desiree Rogers' role at the recent state dinner, which has been in the headlines because of the fallout from Tareq and Michaele Salahi's "party crashing." Ryan claimed that there have been whispers around Washington insinuating that Rogers had overstepped the traditional role of her title at the event to become the "belle of the ball," thus "overshadowing the first lady." Frustrated by Ryan's tabloid-y line of questioning, Gibbs instructed her to "calm down" and to take a deep breath," adding "I do this with my son and that's what happens."

Obviously white Robert Gibbs is RACIST and sexist in comparing a black woman journalist with over two decades of experience to his own child.

/sarcasm ... mostly?

In the end, Gibbs recommended that they return to more weighty issues, "like 98,000 men and women in Afghanistan."

Damnit, those bastards in the White House ignored our men and women in Afghanistan for months. Now for Gibbs to act as though they should be top of mind is simply infuriating.

I think they will now use the 98000 soldiers as a cop out of any uncomfortable conversation they will encounter in the future. It will add to the growing list of their new invented purposes for the military, like good photo-ops.

Even the press sec is looking older by the day. That does not equate to maturity, of course.

I saw this clip on TV today. I could not believe how insulting he was to her. I said, “That’s great, Gibbs, insult them so they start telling the truth about you guys.”

she was acting like a spoiled child..acting like her question was extremely important, and talking to a member of the White House staff in a very rude manner. She deserved the dressing down she got. If you are a “journalist” and want to deal in “bantering” and rumors, go work for TMZ.

It is a case of Dems showing their true stripes. Democrats are paternalistic a$$bags and my black folk are silly for continuing to let Dems use them for their own means. I left the plantation and no one can make me go back.

I feel like the only reason people are sticking up for this so called “reporter” is because the opposition is Obama staff. Listen to the exchange...she was asking a stupid and pointless question, acting like a spoiled child (as liberals often do), and talking to him as if her question was more important than any other, when in fact it was nothing more than gossip-mongering. She was in the wrong, he was right, and should in fact, have been much harsher..I’m tired of the liberal press acting like the White House has to kowtow to them as if they exist on a higher plane.

I so disagree. It is a journalist’s job to ask uncomfortable questions. If he felt that it was not a valid question, he should have just said that and not demeaned her by calling her a child. There were a million other words he could have chosen to get his point across, but “out of the abundance of the heart, so the mouth speaks”.

I think he’s been doing a fantastic job. He’s been there for over ten months and has yet to actually answer one question.

it wasn’t an “uncomfortable” or even an important question..he asked her “who said these things” and all she could say was “well..its’ been bantered about...there are rumors”.. this is good journalism? NO. She was uber pushy...she deserved everything she got and more.. journalists used to show respect and now all they do is act like rabid dogs at a bloodbath. The only reason anyone is defending the MSM in this case is because the other side works for Obama. In this case he was correct, if she wants to act like a rude child, she should get slapped down like one.

What the hell are you doing defending Gibbs? Did he NOT attend college and public speaking courses? He responded to her in a demeaning, condescending, smarmy way. OneI would think that the White House spokesman would be used to questions that he doesn’t like and be able to respond in a firm, professional manner. Honey, please. She responded to his insult in a more....professional manner than I could have managed.
