Protesters (rioters) damage Calif. university leader's home (and throw bombs at police cars)

BERKELEY, Calif. – Eight people were under arrest Saturday after protesters broke windows, lights and planters outside the home of the chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley.

University spokesman Dan Mogulof said 40 to 70 protesters also threw incendiary devices at police cars and the home of Chancellor Robert Birgeneau about 11 p.m. Friday. There were no fires or injuries.

The protest at the chancellor's home came late the same day that police arrested 66 protesters at a campus classroom building that was partially taken over for four days.

The protesters are demonstrating against state funding cuts that have led to course cutbacks, faculty furloughs and sharp fee increases.

"The attack at our home was extraordinarily frightening and violent. My wife and I genuinely feared for our lives," Birgeneau said in a statement issued through the university.

The eight were arrested on suspicion of rioting, threatening an education official, attempted burglary, attempted arson of an occupied building, felony vandalism, and assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.

They include two Berkeley students and one from the University of California, Davis, Mogulof said. Of the remaining five, four had San Francisco Bay-area addresses, while one is from Brooklyn, N.Y. Their ages ranged from 20-41. At least three are women.

"This is what it looks like when a student group gets hijacked by an extreme and violent element in its ranks," Mogulof said.

An Associated Press freelance photographer saw at least four broken decorative light globes, overturned vases and plants, and shattered terra cotta planters. At least two windows were broken, one boarded over, the other shattered in a spider web pattern. Birgeneau was in his living room, but did not speak to reporters.

The protesters shouted "no justice, no peace" as they attacked the home, Mogulof said.

I might catch heat for this, but we need another Kent State-type show of force to get rid of these violent, deadly radicals. They are a menace to society, and to law and order.

Not from me. Why a campus should be a law free zone is
beyond me. And there's lots of evidence that the Guardsmen
at Kent were returning fire.

So we have a bunch of liberal college professors who are making a great living walking around teaching their students that “the rich” are putting the screws to the poor working man. Moreover, you have rich college professors like Bill Ayres teaching students that violence against an unjust government is perfectly okay.

Of course, when they say these things THEY AREN’T TALKING ABOUT THEMSELVES. It’s okay to make six or seven figures if you’re doing the work of “the people”.

So now we’re in an economic downturn and no one has any money to keep these rich elitists in their good jobs. So what do they do? They put the screws to the students.

And it’s hard to feel sorry for these idiot students, because they’re not exactly “Poor working class people”. Many of these protesters are wearing nice clothes and smoking pot. Many of these student protesters are children of wealthy, privileged members of society.

And these students will vote for the very same libs now putting the screws to them, which leaves me wondering how Berkley can boast about having the best and the brightest.

Just wait, because this is coming soon to your healthcare - brought to you by an alliance of the students and the faculity at Berkley.

So what did we learn here?

Excellent: I’m glad no one is paying attention....

Well in reading histor of the October Revolution 1918 it was the rich elite students at university (only they had the means to attend) not workers who brought down the Tsar and ushered in Communism.

This is an act of charity on the students part. There are now two more openings at UC Berkeley.

Remember the Korean shopkeepers during the LA riots, Chancellor Birgeneau? Up on the roof with a couple of 9mm handguns, hubby blazes away at the rioters while his better half keeps reloading. Just a proposal for your consideration, Byron

There weren’t many bodies in the street. My guess is the Koreans were not firing for effect. Just trying to scare off the looters.

Yeah, and five will get you ten they have the backing of international communists organizations funded by some rich guy.

Does the chancellor even have control over funding? There will be a lot more of this as programs are cut all over.

As I recall from when I had kids in Jr high (Calif), there is such a law. It may be Federal. I think it applies to any teacher, even off campus, that may feel threatened.

So I had to shut up my kid in the Saturday movie, when he said to his teacher when he saw her, “Mrs. xxx Sucks”.

That could be interpreted as a threat.

When Ronald Reagan ran for governor of California, one of his campaign promises was clean up the mess in Berkeley. I think I fell in love with him then. :)

The October Revolution did not bring down the tsar--he was already out in March 1917. The Bolshevik takeover was almost 8 months later.

The intelligentsia clearly played a key role. I recently bought Richard Pipes' Concise History of the Russian Revolution but haven't gotten to the main part yet--it seems to be a very good book.

Judges are protected by such laws because they must be free of threats from those who deserve justice..

Education officials have the power to dispense a certain kind of justice as well—ranging from low grades, to honor-code violations, to expulsions. And wreck lives in the process. I wouldn’t be surprised if many have come under threat as a result.
