Israel threatens to use force against settlers
Breitbart (AP) ^ | December 20, 2009 | Ian Deitch

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israeli authorities could soon use special commando units, unmanned spy planes and cellphone-jamming equipment to enforce a moratorium on new settlement construction in the West Bank, military officials said Sunday, deepening a showdown between the government and Jewish settlers.

Enraged settlers leaders vowed to resist the plan, prompting Defense Minister Ehud Barak to warn that settlers would face the full wrath of the military if they continue to flout the 10-month construction slowdown.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the settlement slowdown last month in an attempt to restart peace talks with the Palestinians. But the Palestinians have rejected the plan because it allows for construction to proceed in 3,000 settlement homes already under construction in the West Bank and does not affect east Jerusalem, which Palestinians hope will be their capital

“Settlers”? Has Barak even read the Torah? This land belongs to the Jewish People. The Arab interloper is the enemy, not his fellow Jew. Disgraceful.

Netanyahu is running the show. I feel the same way you do about Barak, but the buck stops at the top. Who on earth are the Israelis going to vote for, if all the parties keep betraying them?

Sharon was largely responsible for the last betrayal. And now even Netanyahu.

I guess I am just too old to be able to figure out what happened here.

Perhaps it's just entropy in the human genome and it's only a matter of time before every human degenerates into a protector of evil.

I think this has a lot to do with US interference. As long as Iran is developing nuclear weapons, the United States has enormous leverage against Israel. I do not believe this anti-settler policy is Israeli in origin, but rather based on the Obama administration’s interests. Israel has no alternative to appease the United States as best they can. Bibi has to walk a tight rope between the weak US foreign policy and the conservative groups in his coalition. As the Iran clock ticks, you will see Bibi’s policy become more hawkish in nature and he will act unilaterally when he needs to.

This information should be presented to all the Bibi lovers out there who think he is the savior of Israel. He is caving to Obama, just as he caved to Clinton.

Undoubtedly, but the US is so weak now, nobody is afraid of us, why should Israel be?

Just as an exercise, can you name one unfriendly nation that fears the US?

How about one friendly nation that respects and trusts us?

So what's up with Israel?

Does anyone really doubt the Muslim's plan for every Jew on the planet?

If so why can't I sell 'em the Brooklyn bridge as well?

I just don't get it.

"As long as Iran is developing nuclear weapons the U.S. and the EU are dependent on Muslim oil the United States and the EU have enormous leverage against Israel."

Yes, I understand that, perfectly.

Yet that also works in reverse, and turnabout is fair play.

Consider this: the one nation so seriously affected by this, is the one nation with the ability to shut off mid east oil, Israel.

If the US won't make nuclear Arabs and Persians go away, Israel can make the mid east oil go away for the US and Europe, and do a lot of damage to the nuclear ragheads.

Russia, China and India would be thrilled at the shift in power, China and India would chaff at the loss of US market, but US market competition would fall to minimal worldwide.

What I take away from your point is that the United States and other Western Democracies lack the political will to seriously deter Iran’s deliberate provocations. I would agree, but I think Obama is also using the situation to pressure Israel. The Middle East peace deal is (or at least was) one of Obama’s priorities and Obama will only get a deal if Israel capitulates and gives concessions to the Arabs.

Israel has no incentive to do a deal unless Obama has leverage and I think he could use the Iranian nuclear situation as leverage. Basically he could say to Israel, “If you want backing on Iran then you need to stop building these settlements”. Never let a good crisis go to waste... at least that’s how I see it.

PS - Thanks

It’s not that they fear the United States per se, but rather that they have a significant self-interest in keeping strong US ties. Israel has no qualms in attacking Iran, but if the US does not endorse the attack then it will become a diplomatic risk. You can see evidence of this with Israel trying to strengthen its relations with other countries to hedge against such a risk. The Israeli and US partnership is inestimable and it would be inexcusable for Obama to use it as leverage.

If push comes to shove... Israel will unilaterally attack Iran. Of course, this is how I see it.

There's a huge difference between an enemy fearing an attack from the US (knowing full well that we'd be stretched to the breaking point were we to try right now), and a dependent state to whom the USA is the only "friend" in the world, threatening to cut off aid.

Yeah, except he already has. Also previous presidents have mistreated Israel. Bush 43 failed repeatedly to undertake joint action against Iran. Clintoon financed the "make Arafat a billionaire" program. Bush 41 sold the "ignore Iraqi SCUDS while I kiss Bedouin butt" program, and even Reagan had the Iran "kill anyone you want, I can't do squat because you released the Embassy Hostages" policy.

Israel has seen this for years, and it gets progressively worse. Why would they think we would improve without being threatened?

Russia's Georgia operation was simply the reversal of US policy in Eastern Europe by order of Vladimir Putin. Zer0 promptly gave up the anti ballistic missile deployment for EE when THREATNED. Seems to me Israel should just tell Zer0 what he's gonna do, everybody else does.

If push comes to shove... Israel will unilaterally attack Iran.

I certainly hope so, but why beat down settlers in the meantime? Just because Zer0 asks? He's going to keep his record as a total fail on interfering with America's enemies, and if Israel WILL whack Iran and Zer0 interferes, the price of interference is the destruction of the oil fields and port in addition to the nuke bunkers, which will severely affect the US and European economies at the minimum.

Israel holds a lot of cards, if Zer0 call their bluff, he would find it wasn't.

Really, well:

1) We give Israel money, but it soon may not be worth much.

2) Historically, Israel whipped all the Muzzies put together with just logistical help every time they engaged.

3) Modern Israel needs far less logistical support than ever.

4) Egypt and Jordan will never get suckered by the wacko Muslims again.

5) Saudi scumbags would last about 30 seconds without US protection from other Muzzie scumbags.

Israel's need for the US is at an all time low, and Israel is far from helpless.

The obvious strategy is to squeeze Israel territorially smaller and acquire operational nuclear weapons and delivery. Then a surprise strike on a tiny area with several bombs will wipe Israel from the face of the earth. Even more Palis will die nextdoor having been used to force Israelis into the tiny indefensible area, but who cares? That's what they were for.

So I still don't get it, what's up with Israel?

Why are they patiently waiting to be killed, and giving settlers grief?

Seems to me the best chance for survival is to do exactly opposite of what Zer0 wants and shove it down his throat like everybody else.
