For years, global warming alarmists have pointed to every drought and heat wave as proof that global warming was a real environmental threat. They had few qualms about blurring the line between weather and climate to make a PR point. Perhaps, then, it was karma that brought a blizzard and freezing temperatures to the U.N. climate change Conference of Parties confab in Copenhagen (or COP-15 for short) last week.
You may have read about the 1,200 limos and 140 private planes commissioned to transport COP-15 dignitaries in style. Critics love to point to the hypocrisy of world leaders - such as Prince Charles and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown - touching down in separate private planes to a conference ostensibly dedicated to curbing greenhouse gas emissions.
But it's the Flying High Lords of Greendom's air of unreality that concerns me. If world leaders truly believed that global warming will lead to famine, rising sea levels and melting of the North Pole ice - along with countless deaths - surely they would want to set an example by flying commercial.
Instead, they travel like pooh-bahs of the stratosphere, then justify their excesses by tossing $100 or so into a carbon- offset fund.
In that godlike spirit, President Obama lauded the COP-15's pact to limit global warming to a rise of only 2 degrees Celsius by 2050 as "an unprecedented breakthrough."
What's the next trick? An eclipse?
Now I am fairly skeptical about global warming alarmism - largely because it's hard to heed true believers when they fail to behave in a way that addresses their big issue.
My advice to true believers:
-- If you really believe global warming is caused by man and threatens Earth, stop supporting treaties that don't mandate greenhouse-gas reductions.

Ping.
I had to do a double-take to make sure this was indeed from the San Fran Chronicle.
It wasn’t karma as this bloody state media moron states, it was God saying he’s had enough of this crap.
I couldn’t believe this was from the SF Lefty Times, but, the analogy about how people can buy carbon credits to offset output is like how wealthy courtesans could buy “pardons” from the clergy in the Middle Ages.
Pay to play, right Governor Richardson?
If the Hollywood crowd is so damn sure that sea levels are going to rise, why does the same crowd live in Malibu oceanfront homes????
Debra Saunders is the token ‘sort-of-conservative’ with that paper.
Settled Science = Dogma
Climate Deniers = Heretics
Carbon Credits = Indulgences
IPCC = Ecumenical Council
For all the talk from Progressives about how they despise religion, their social constructs are exactly the same.
I won't believe they are serious until they have learned to use the word "gotomeeting.com".
Debra Saunders has been a relatively conservative voice at the Chron for years now. When KSFO went conservative back in the ‘90’s, she was one of the first people to guest on the shows there because she was one of the few sensible newspaper voices in the Bay Area.
Bottom line - Human CO2 contribution to the greenhouse effect is 0.117%.
Reducing this number by 30%, which would be extremely costly in both lives and treasure, would reduce this number to 0.0819% (a whopping .03% reduction!)
You are correct, my Mom is an “expert” in English literature from teaching it for 25+ years, history included.
It seems like a great term paper for a budding conservative Lit major who wants to piss off his weenie, Commie professor.

If any believers in global warming want to venture to the upper Midwest for Christmas we are bracing for a Cat-5 level snowstorm. Unlike the liberal “victims” of Katrina we will take this storm in stride and not expect FEMA or the feds to help us dig out. I hope the storm doesn’t knock out those forests of worthless windmills or it might get a bit chilly.
The Church of Kyoto is the Left’s religion.
Debra was a treasure in the Daily News (Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley-formerly called The Green Sheet),
She wrote a mostly conservative weekly column.
She commented one day on a phrase her father often used, “100 years, all new people.”
This wise recognition of the folly of arrogant man is exactly why we are all so leary of projections for 2100 or beyond expected to call us to action today.
However, just this week, in a petulant response to the backlash of Climategate, Jim Hansen made the flat out prediction that 2010 will end up being the hottest year ever measured in the entire record.
And since he is charge of collecting, analyzing and graphing the world’s temperature, I have no reason to doubt that it will turn out otherwise.
The gloves are off, now.
Is Debra Saunders FReeper Debo21?
