I’m not a Catholic, but his type of attack is leveled at all Christians, not just Catholics IMO. Even if this person did have a personal beef with Catholicism or the Pope, an attack of this type inspires nut-jobs to do things to the leaders of other religions.

Couldn’t have said it better. I’m afraid these kinds of evil acts have only just begun. Hatred towards Christians is not only tolerated, but fashionable.
Their problem isn't necessarily with the Pope himself, but the One Who the Pope is seen as representing. The Pope is who they can get their hands on.
If they could kill Christ, they'd do that instead. Christ is the real object of hatred.
