Sources: Nigeria Failed To Use U.S. Body Scanners

Al Qaeda's admission Monday that it was behind a plot to bring down an American airliner is hardly a surprise. What is a surprise, in fact, is that the United States sent high-tech explosive-detecting equipment to Nigeria that was never used when the bomber boarded the plane, CBS 2 has learned.

The United States spent big bucks a year ago to send four full-body airport scanners to Nigeria to help detect explosives and drugs at the country's four international airports, but as amazing as it may seem, sources told CBS 2 the scanners weren't used when Christmas day bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab boarded his plane with an explosive strapped to his leg.

"We have to find out why. If anyone should have gone through this type of body scanning, it was this terror suspect. He clearly, clearly fit the profile," Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), the ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee," told CBS 2. "These cost good American tax dollars, and yet were not used by the Nigerian government at the airport."

You have got to be kidding me.

Those things cost millions of dollars. If someone can come up with an (authentic) picture of just one, intact, in working order, installed at an airport in Nigeria, I'll be amazed.

Might be amazing to this reporter, but come on! It is a third-world country. Probably don’t even have electricity 24/7.

Hey, I’ve got an idea. How about profiling MUSLIMS?

HEY WHAT A COINCIDENCE! I WON SOME VERY EXPENSIVE SECURITY BODY SCANNERS IN THE NIGERIAN LOTTERY. BARRISTER MICHAEL A. MUMABWI HAD THEM SHIPPED TO ME AS SOON AS I SENT HIM A WESTERN UNION PAYMENT TO A SECURE LOCATION IN BENIN

Those clowns in Nigeria are too stupid to operate and maintain them. All turd world countries are just that.
We must protect ourselves because no one else will do it.

Not only third world countries — there are others who don’t take the threat of terrorism very seriously. They figure bombing and other acts won’t happen to them, and why should they care about the U.S. One of the many reasons why we should stop sending aid to ingrate countries.

Exactly. Send someone to Lagos and find out where the heck these things are. I bet they are not even in the vicinity of the airport.

How about Holland? Why did they fail in detecting the explosive materials carried by terrorist “Omar Al Farouq”?

Jesus, Mary and Joseph.

Is Peter King serious?

"We have to find out why. If anyone should have gone through this type of body scanning, it was this terror suspect. He clearly, clearly fit the profile," Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), the ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee," told CBS 2. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

We are dealing with an Enemy who will always exploit the weakest link and this was it. BTW, Who are the "Sources"? Sounds like some DC style CYOA is happening.

how do we know he carried the stuff on board? couldn’t someone on the “inside” have planted the material in the bathroom, then he gets up from his seat towards the end of the flight and assembles the material himself?

He wouldn’t set off any alarms or anything because he was clean the whole way through

"These cost good American tax dollars, and yet were not used by the Nigerian government at the airport."

Then their flights don't land here. Everybody off the plane for screening at the last stop before the US...or your flight is denied clearance for landing.

Passengers in transit remain in a secure area. Not sure if they are scanned again. Seems to me DHS has got their work cut out for them, checking all these international airports for their internal security procedures.

I do know that the security contractor there is getting slammed on several of its policies and from what I gather it’s all justified.

pars pro toto?

I do wonder why this Nigerian was able to pass through Schiphol with the explosives.

I’d bet there was a large cash bribe involved to step around the bomb detector machine. Bribe is called a “DASH” in Nigeria.

I’m interested in finding out why he waited until they were on short final into Detroit. Maximum impact over a congested area?

I am 100% certain that they get scanned not only once, not only twice, but trice at Amesterdam airport.

If what you are saying is a true scenario then it means that Al Qaeda terrorists have infiltrated the security apparatus working in Amsterdam and that would be a total disaster and absolute nightmare if true.
