Plastic grocery bags are very useful and do no harm to the environment whatsoever. Cloth bags, OTOH, collect and breed germs like E. coli, and contaminate groceries unless washed frequently. Paper bags are still the best, but the people in charge of these lunatic decisions have no one's best interests at heart.

I look forward to reading about the depression in retail sales in the hellhole once called " The Nation's Capitol."

Someone contaminates their (eco-green reusable) bag at home, in the car, or from their kid’s or pet’s poop (etc.).

Then they bring it into the store and contaminate the whole checkout line.

Next, we have a E. coli (or similar) problem and the inspectors have one heck of a problem back-tracking the source.
