Strategic interest has a broader meaning than oil in the ground. Israel provides a model for a modern democratic state in a region lacking in such a thing. But the Muslims don’t want this: look what they have done to Lebanon. If they took over Israel in ten years it would look like Lebanon. Heck, look at Turkey, which is now backing away from modernism. Muslim imperialism is much like the old imperialism, such as the antique Roman one: it is exploitive : once the elites have succeeded the juices out of the fruit, what remains is a shell. What will the Middle East become once the oil is gone? just look at what happened to the Ottoman Empire.
