What is Walmart thinking?

"The customer also claimed to be acting in self-defense. He accused Bauman of using a slur against him."

Black customer?

He followed a customer to his car to get his tag number. That is against Walmart policy and is grounds for termination.

What do we expect? We live in an increasingly matriarchal culture where those in power expect us to take a beating and thank them for it. We are expected to cater to the worthless and the incapable as if we owe them something because they are worthless and incapable when they should be glad they aren’t sent away starving for their indignity.

A Wal-Mart greeter in Chattanooga was assaulted by an off-duty Chattanooga Police Officer and had to be hospitalized. The police department initially only suspended the the officer, but the howl from the public was a bit too much and they initially fired him for what they called other unrelated matters.

The greeter is suing the officer and the department and it was mentioned int he news that Wal-mart was upset the greeter had filed a civil suit and was reviewing the incident.

Which I feel is code speak for they are looking to fire him.

Sounds like working for Wal-mart is very hazardous, in more ways than one.

Poor retiree comes from another place and time where if someone slugs you, you can slug back in self defense.

What would have happened if the the man just stood there and took it? At that age, who knows what a series of unanswered blows will do to you? I don’t care if Wal-Mart pays all my bills if all that’s left of me is in a vegetative state.

Hope the man can find other work elsewhere.

Boycott Wal-Mart if the man doesn’t get his job back.

A good friend of mine, a very decent lady who was in her late 60’s @ the time, was fired from Wal-Mart a few years ago for accidentally backing into one of the cart corrals in the parking lot one night. No major damage was done. She had worked there for well over 14 years.

Thank god I am not beholden to a low paying job in the US.
Every day there seems to be some story about a guy doing his job and getting canned for it.
Life in the US just not seem to be worth the crap today.

About 15 years ago an illegal started punching me out of the blue in a bar in Chandler. He knocked my Tennessee hat off during the process. I rope-a-doped him and took his ass to the floor and let him meet my fist right away.

The bar owner said I had a right to defend myself, I was expecting him to say no problem. He didn't, I had to leave. (after getting my hat back and finishing my beer).

There is something about a struggle and the aftermath they are worried about. This nation is becoming very lame in that area.

A few random thoughts:

-As another poster pointed out, the greeter probably put his job in jeopardy the moment he stepped outside of the store. Most companies would rather write off a bit of merchandise than risk liability, and it’s probably in Wal-Mart’s employee policy as well. Why they didn’t state that as the reason for his termination, and instead sacked him for legitimately defending himself, doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

-There’s probably a fair amount of CYA going on here. Firing Bauman gives them a little cover if the other guy starts talking discrimination. The whole “we acted quickly to rectify a situation, in keeping with our values as a company, blah, blah, blah” (I used to work in HR, forgive me if I am wee bit cynical).

-Bauman is one tough old timer. The other guy looks to be half his age, but he hung in there with him.

-I don’t know what Bauman’s chances are with a lawsuit, but I’d like to see him collect something for his trouble. Getting fired for not wanting to get your butt whipped is a pretty rough deal.

When a business does something like fire a man who was trying to do what is right for them, it puts in question what their view of the customer security realy means to them. Until they rectify this one, I think I will go to Kmart again.

Here is the local story and a video of the event. From the look of things, I would place the Walmart employee in the wrong.

Oh yes the 69 year old was so innocent. Give me a break...he threw out a racial slur or two. Walmart did the right thing.

What’s worse is that the local prosecutor is pursuing felony assault charges against the former greeter....
