This reminds me of a bumper we made for a 1967 Ford 3/4 ton PU I used in Montana when working for a seismograph company in 1968-69. We made it out of about 6 or maybe 8 inch channel iron and had a Warren electric winch in the center of it. One night while traveling between Roundup and Sydney with my brother-in-law driving and me sleeping I woke to the rhythmic sound of “thump, thump, thump” I looked over and he was fast asleep driving on the shoulder and hitting reflector posts. I turned the ignition off and we coasted to a stop. I drove the rest of the way.

I’ll be looking for a good used 4X4 four-door soon. Something easy to maintain. Any suggestions?

Here’s what I was looking at:
Nissan Frontier
Chevy Trailblazer
Subaru Outback
Whatever similar

Appreciations in advance.

What is the purpose? Budget?

We have shrunk from a Suburban to a Yukon for a people mover. For cargo I rely on a tandem axle trailer. The Yukon will still carry four adults in comfort, five adults with the three in the middle seat somewhat cozy. If we use the third row, it is really crowded, but we seldom have the need.

In your budget you need to keep operating expenses in mind. I needed a third stoplight replacement for the Yukon last month. $260.00+ at the dealer, but “only” $70.00 on line. Same with tires, the Yukon has 17 inch which are slightly more costly than 16.

All the electronic gadgetry is also more difficult and thus more costly to maintain. If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it.

Purpose for mainly going to/from work and my Sons’ school. The roads get really icy in Golden, Colorado.
Budget, something used under $12,000 for $200-month. I’ve seen Outbacks on CraigsList for $6,000, but don’t know about their maintenance issues. A buddy at work has a Frontier and loves the thing.
I was seriously looking at the Trailblazer, but some have told me that they have a lot of mechanical issues.

I work with a Trailblazer owner. The first and last they will own.

The Yukon is our third in that family. Two Suburbans, one GMC and one Chevy and now the Yukon. The Yukon was a little pricey for a $12,000.00 budget. It is a 2005, 48,000 miles, Denali, and was about double what you have in your budget when we bought it two months ago.

My son has a Toyota Highlander. Economical on the road and very low maintenance costs.

Even a Hyundai or a Kia with AWD ain’t cheap. For that matter, nothing with 4WD/AWD is cheap.
