Visiting with family over the Christmas holiday, my brother talked me into going to see Avatar, the part-animated, part-live action and wholly computer-generated sci-fi movie.
Normally, I dont like to go to see movies, but this was in 3-D at an IMAX theater. Well, I just had to check that out.
It was an incredible visual experience, once you got past the idea that the movie looked like a Yes album cover complete with floating mountains.
In fact, a lot of the movie is familiar.
The story borrows heavily from Dances With Wolves, most of which was filmed northeast of Rapid City. Lets just say that Avatar is not Dances With Wolves in Space.
Sure, a war-wounded soldier travels to an isolated outpost, contacts the local tribe, which assigns an initially reluctant female translator, with whom he falls in love while learning about their culture, is given a name in their language (something that, roughly translated, means moron), and he is accepted into their tribe shortly before he belatedly warns them that they are about to be wiped out by his technologically-superior kind.

You gotta problem with Yes album covers? LOL. Good morning FRiend.
Only.....it is.
It’s more like “Dances with Ferngully”.
For nearly 3 hours. Beautiful cinimatography, gorgeous enviroment and fantastic Special Effects. Truly impressive and immersive.
But story-wise - C’mon ...
No, it’s Dances With Smurfs!................
I always hated YES
I often wondered how old those Brits needed to be before their balls dropped???? LOL
Back on subject....I like the South Park term for the movie
“Dances with Smurfs”
This review sounds like the reviews I am getting from people seeing the movie. Visually the movie is breathtaking, the story is lame and over done.
We get hit with “environmental” propaganda every day, from all sides. Why spend $9.00 to see more of it?
If you're looking for a very good movie see Sherlock Holmes. Saw it yesterday and was very pleasantly surprised.
I went to a Yes concert. It was THE MOST BORING CONCERT I’VE EVER BEEN TO!.........
it is NOT “Dances With Wolves” ... it’s a CHEAP KNOCKOFF with great effects..
which is why those of us who USE the analogy, is done so in that vein... or to put it simply.. we refer to Avatar as “DANCES WITH SMURFS”
I wonder if Hollywood will ever abandon this stereotype of evil corp/military ravishing an innocent pristine environment and portray some reality.
Stereotype: Mostly white, evil profit seeking corporate / military types devastate nature, kill indigenous species, while mining the earth for resources.
Reality: Generations of farmers, and thousands of acres of the most fertile ground on earth dry up and blow away because environmentally crazed government authorities turn off water supplies to protect the life of an otherwise insignificant fish.
Sounds like ‘Dances with Wolves’ in Space to me. With a little “Skyland” thrown in. Plus some anti-US and anti-war propaganda.
Love Yes....and I believe Patrick Moraz is/was a Freeper???
Probably have seen them 20 or so times......
Agreed. But,the movie is going to pass 2 billion worldwide.
Or "Smurfahontas."
Which proves that a complete crap script can be sold so long as the packaging is really slick.
Avatar = Pocahantas/Dances with Smurfs/Ferngully with Giant Smurfs.
Add to that completely transparent and often inappropriate political commentaries.
While the CGI is amazing the plot is downright moronic. Disney films have better plot development and dialogue.
No, I've not seen it. I suppose I should support the computer-graphic animation industry and see it on the big screen sometime.
