The U.S.A. has suffered fools before and, perhaps this one is the low mark in what is possible. Three hundred million people have a collective mind and a resolve that can and will transcend even this.
Previous accidents of ineptitude have been simply that. Deliberate acts of megalomania can have different intensities and different results, but this one will be an example to the ages: the price of tolerating "good intentions" at the price of killing the patient.
Another variant of "destroying the village in order to save it."
It has done infinitely more; and it has done it in breathtakingly brief time, historically.
It has stained the concept of egalitarianism irreparably, or at minimum for centuries. All human beings are not the same, save perhaps in the perverse human impulse to play God, with no more wisdom and ability than children and the insane.
But children and the insane historically have been gently prevented from having a hand in guiding and protecting societies; until recently. In the vernacular the long term lesson is: how did that work out?
The fundamental principle is an inescapable law of the universe. Just as matter cannot be ceated from nothing, neither can national wealth, nor national profligacy. Even under the mesmerizing effect of megalomania, the relentless price of imbecility will prevail and no pretense will repeal the law of unintended consequences.

Well, the law-abiding sheep would have been caught unarmed and unable to protect themselves because we all seem to have assumed that the government is there to save us and protect us and they have some sort of interest in doing that.
