Bunny Boiling: Rabbits Burnt To Fuel City
Sky News ^ | October 21, 2009 | Hazel Tyldesley

Swedes will turn on their central heating this winter in the knowledge that it may be powered in part by the burning carcasses of thousands of rabbits.

The creatures are being harvested from parks in Stockholm, shot dead, deep frozen and shipped to a plant in central Sweden where they are burned and used to heat homes.

Some 6,000 rabbits were killed last year for biofuel and 3,000 have so far been culled this year, Stockholm-based newspaper The Local reported.

It added that the effort to shoot the rabbits will be stepped up now autumn has arrived and the fallen leaves make it easier to track down the creatures.

Tommy Tuvunger, a worker for the agency that controls Stockholm's wild animal population, said many of those culled were former household pets, as they are not a breed native to Sweden.

Their appetite for foliage in the city's parks and their prolific breeding was creating a "very big problem" for Stockholm, he added.

"People who think that the bunnies are cute and cuddly suddenly don't think they're as fun anymore and put the animals outside. They think: 'there they can play with the other rabbits'," he told the newspaper Vårt Kungsholmen.

The authorities may see turning rabbits into biofuel as an efficient solution, but their tactic has met with objections from animal rights activists.

Most wild bunnies are very lean. It will take much more fuel to dry them out enough to burn them than what they will output. Typical green energy scheme!

REally? Now that’s interesting. In other words they’re just getting rid of the bodies but not producing any energy? Now if they still had a business model they’d be making dog/cat food? Bunny treats?

It’s from the “Big Rabbit” breed. His name is Roger.

“Now if they still had a business model they’d be making dog/cat food? Bunny treats?” That would be a much better use of the dead bunnies.

If they wanted to efficiently use the bunnies for fuel they would have to cut them up and let them dry in the sun until they were basically bunny jerky.

Don’t tell the Aussies about this. Rabbits are an environmental nightmare there. They’ll jump on any excuse to kill bunnies.

What’s the net energy return of a rabbit, after you spend energy to deep freeze it?

Wish they did it here, we could sure stand to get rid of a few thousand rabbits.
