The White House Correspondents’ Association is apparently not on team CoCo. The WHCA, which hosts the popular annual dinner where the press corp and various celebs get to mingle with the President, announced today that Jay Leno would be emceeing this year’s dinner. Not great timing to be sure: an unpopular comedian joking about a suddenly unpopular President. Probably not the sort of mood lightener Obama was hoping for.
According to CNN Leno was asked to fill the spot — perhaps made most famous by Stephen Colbert back in 2006 — prior to the whole debacle with NBC. Not everyone is thrilled by the choice, though judging from Leno’s last appearance at the dinner the President need not worry to much about coming under to harsh a comedic fire.
The bottom line: Late night talk shows are DEAD!! They're simply advertisement for folks who have a band, wrote a book or made a movie. Whoopie!!
Bring back old movies.
I'm watching Andy, Barney and Opie in the afternoon...in lieu of a dumb soap. Very Happy!!
But I'm old....Maybe the young'ns (18-25) like the late talk shows??
Don’t watch Jay, but I’d pick him to replace the Klod ASAP were I given the choice.
Oh, by Klod, I mean the Kenyan Klod. I dung beetle would make a better president than the slime we’ve got there now.
To say that they're "dead" might be a little premature. I understand that both Letterman and Kimmel make money hand-over-fist for their networks, precisely because their cost of production relative to their commercial revenue generated is so very low - much lower than a scripted drama that would generate similar revenue numbers.
The Tonight Show, up until 8 months ago was the MOST profitable show on NBC, with the Today Show a close second - per hour, of course. Given the payoff to O'Brien, and the added production costs for Leno, they will probably lose money this year for the first time ever. But, it's expected that they'll return to profitability next year, even if they only post modest ratings.
Otherwise I might have had a dozen kids!!
Just miss the old guys...Jimmy Stewart, Dean,...etc..
I don't really watch them anymore either. I also don't watch the Today Show,or the View, but both those programs make buckets of money for their respective networks. While the number of viewers for these shows does seem to incrementally shrink each year, there are many of these "newsy" kinds of shows that continue to remain wildly profitable, for some reason.
I had the pleasure of being in Jay Leno’s company three times. The first for about two hours when he was a passenger on a flight I was working....the other two times backstage after his show. All we did is ask to see him after his show. How many stars would allow that? He’s a really nice guy. I wish him all the best.
On the other hand, I knew a flight attendant who had David Letterman on her flight. She said he was an obnoxious jerk. But we knew that already, didn’t we?
Just a continuation of the cozy relationship between the White House and NBC.
