The former six-term congressman stepped down Friday as host of his conservative talk radio program on a radio station in Phoenix.

"We will formally announce at a later time, but we're moving forward to challenge John McCain," Hayworth told the Associated Press. "I think we all respect John. I think his place in history is secure. But after close to a quarter-century in Washington, it's time for him to come home."

Legislation now being drafted by lawmakers — primarily Sens. Ted Kennedy and John McCain — would allow millions of illegal immigrants in the United States to apply for citizenship.

Adoption of this measure would be a terrible mistake.

The Senate plans to introduce its immigration bill early this year, with the House considering its version later. President Bush has said he hopes to sign an immigration bill in 2007.

In 2006 the Senate passed a bill that would have required illegal immigrants living in the United States for fewer than five years to return to their native countries for a period of time before applying for legal status.

House Republicans prevented debate of the bill, saying it was an amnesty bill, pure and simple, for lawbreakers. Today, the Kennedy-McCain legislation under consideration would go dramatically further. The new law would allow up to 11 million illegal immigrants now living in the United States to gain citizenship after applying, and without ever returning home first.

He might play some of the video clips of John Sidney McCain fumbling, getting confused, talking to himself, lying, and not knowing answers to simple questions. His performance during debates was pathetic. And there is his wife posing with duct tape across her mouth. Yuck!

I think this will be an exercise in futility for JD Hayworth. If he loses this primary, he is probably done with any elected office.

So what? It's not like Hayworth has been out there looking for elective office openings, know what I mean?

If anyone can take out the stinking pile of garbage known as John McCain, Hayworth can do it.

Sounds pretty definite. We wasn't that clear on his radio show. I think because of legal threats to Clear Channel from McCain's camp.

Hayworth is doing all of us a great service. By running, he will force McCain to act like a conservative up until the primary election. This means, he won’t be able to organize a “Gang of 14” solution to healthcare, which would just be Obamacare-lite. He won’t be able to join Graham’s traitor team on Cap and Tax. He won’t be able to ‘reach-across-the-aisle’ on Amnesty. If he does, he might lose the primary.

After the 2010 elections, it won’t matter as much, as the Democrats will only have 52-53 seats, not 59. But for the next 6-8 months, the damage McCain could inflict is immense. Now that Obama realizes he can’t pass his socialism strictly with his own Democratic votes, McCain will be the first guy he seeks out. Hayworth will keep him on the reservation, and by the time the primary, it’ll be too late to pass any of this stuff. Good job JD Hayworth, I hope you win, but just by running, we’ve already won.

I predict that Hayworth has Sheriff Joe backing him up, and a high local card like that trumps two out-of-staters and one governor.

Besides, what does Hayworth have to lose? If McStain manages to survive a primary challenge, Arizonans will head on to the polls in the general election and no matter who wins, Arizona will return a Democrat to the United States Senate.

Those of us conservatives who have been awake for the past 20 or so years have had it up to here with Juan McCain. We've been back stabbed time and again. Most people have a short memory but those of us who post here DO NOT.

McCain has been one of the most frustrating people I can ever remember. He's not a true blue believer in conservative causes. He puts up his finger to see which way the wind is blowing and them makes his case. I could write a very lengthy post on McCain but why. Most here know how duplicitous he is.

McCain should never have run for president in 2008. 60% of the Republicans could not stand him and he had to know this. He simply didn't have enough support from the base. That's a recipe for disaster and the Republicans should have know this. We have Obama as president as result of this man's ego.

Okay let's make the required salute to John McCain the patriot. He is a genuine war hero. We always have to remember this. But the guy has simply too much mileage from this. Without his military record and his family name the politician Juan McCain would not have gone far. It's time for the guy to step down and let JD take the reins.

Yes, McCain’s role in the shamnesty battle of a few short years ago shouldn’t be forgotten. He was all for it, and I believe he made some disparaging remarks about those against it (namely, us).

It depends. If she makes a couple of cameo appearances, I can forgive her for the payback in loyalty. Right now, I do not know of any other prospective presidential candidate in 2012 which excites me anywhere close to Sarah.

Jindal: Needs polish. Maybe ready by 2016, definitley not by 2012.

Huckabee: Forget it. He's a worse RINO than McCain on a lot of issues.

Romney: Any chance he had went bye-bye when he had the opportunity to distance himself from Massachusetts style health care and didn't. I don't think "We'll bankrupt America slower than ObamaCare" is a particularly great selling point.

Pence: I'd rather see him take out Bayh. I also don't think he can generate much excitement, though I think he's a good man.

Pawlenty: About as exciting as watching paint dry.

Thune: South Dakota: 3 electoral votes which go Republican anyway.

Fred Thompson: Liked him in 2008, but ran a terrible campaign. The window of opportunity has closed.
