(CNN) -- A California man sold his 14-year-old daughter to an 18-year-old man for cash, beer and meat -- then called police when the prospective bridegroom didn't live up to his end of the deal, authorities said Tuesday.
Marcelino de Jesus Martinez faces felony charges, according to police in Greenfield, California.
Marcelino de Jesus Martinez, 36, of Greenfield, California, was arrested Monday and booked into the Monterey County Jail, Greenfield police said in a statement. He faces felony charges of receiving money for causing a person to cohabitate, police said.
Martinez had arranged through a third party to have his daughter marry the older teenager, identified by authorities as Margarito de Jesus Galindo, of Gonzales, California. In exchange, Galindo was to pay Martinez $16,000 and provide him with 160 cases of beer, 100 cases of soda, 50 cases of Gatorade, two cases of wine, and six cases of meat, Greenfield Police Chief Joe Grebmeier told CNN.
All those involved in the case are from the western Mexican state of Oaxaca, the police chief said. In the Oaxacan community, such an agreement is "normal and honorable," he said. "In California, it's against the law."

"How much for the women?"
"Your women. I want to buy your women"

True but generally you will not see Mexicans drinking Corona. I have spent a lot of time in Mexico since the mid 80’s and what you mostly see consumed by the locals in Tecate and Carta Blanca, and to a lesser extent, Bohemia. Most locals bars don’t even sell Corona, they reserve that for the tourists in the tourist areas. I am not a huge fan of Mexican beer but when I was down there I almost always drank Pacifico or XX Lager (The green label). Of course come Christmas time I used to love picking up some Noche Bueno. Now tequila, give me a nice bottle of Don Julio and I’m a happy camper.
Weidemans... 2/3 the price of a case was the deposit on the bottles!

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
It's important to keep your electrolytes replenished.
I believe it was Paul Harvey who used to say when reporting stories such as this "It's not 'One World'."
“In the Oaxacan community, such an agreement is “normal and honorable,..” “
Uh, I know a hell of a lot of Mexicans who would disagree with that statement. Just a guess, but these people might be ‘Indians’ rather than suburban or citified Mexicans.
Selling a young girl is not “normal and honorable” for the majority of Mexicans.
Are we talking here about bride price? Then we’re talking about another culture other than modernized Mexico.
I remember being in a mexican grocery store (in mexico) and they had budweiser for something like $10 a sixpack. Sol, Superior, Dos XX’s not so much.
And if it had happened with an underage Christian Caucasian, they’d have in-depth stories on how these “Bible-thumper” parents likely voted for Bush.
There, I fixed that Bull Shirt P.C. title
Cash, bear and meat: All the essentials
Another fine example of Hispanics who, as Nancy Pelosi says, "make America more American."
Budweiser, more likely.
There are so many questions left unanswered here. Journalism is dead.

The article is dead wrong in saying Oaxaca is a Western state. It is in the deep South of Mexico. Indigenous Mexico. You are correct in saying this is part of the "Indian" culture and these are in fact "Indians." Oaxaca is 70% indigenous.
In the subcontinent of India,Hindu India, it would be the other way around. The Groom would get money and "stuff."
To be fair that is like Judging America based on Detroit,New Orleans, South Chicago, etc.
To show the trend of Mexico becoming more European the more North you go using Chihuahua as an example it is 5% Indian with 50% European.
Tecate, all the way. And if I can’t get it, XX. Although, Carta Blanca isn’t bad, and I like Sol.
They forgot the chocolate. The Bride needs chocolate. No chocolate, no deal.
(y’all are so funny !)
