I think you're barking up the wrong tree. John announced before the '08 election that he wasn't running. He was talked into staying by constituents but mostly by House Republicans who wanted him to retain his leadership position. The possibility of McCain's Senate seat opening up if McCain won may have figured in the deal.

I don't think that he will get in the middle of a pissing match between JD and McCain. My guess is that he will endorse McCain.
