This is an interesting problem. I live on a farm and I am a little ansy about showering at times. I try to keep the house locked at all times, but the noise of the shower covers up most external sounds. A big, aggressive dog sounds like the best bet until I could get to my shotgun.

Any suggestions for an old geezer?

Dogs or shotguns? Dogs, any breed that barks will work. :)I'm partial to the German Shepards or labs. But even lapdogs can alert you to someones presence.

For shotguns, well everybody has their favorites. But any pump or auto will work, no need to go hi tech. $300 or less will suit you fine. Remingtons, Bennellis, Berretas, Mossberg...just pick which one you like best and can easiest afford.

Cheapest, simplest solution?

Take a bath. You can be vigilant while the tub fills, then, when the faucet is off, you can hear things around you.

Lowes has a Zenith Indoor/Outdoor Motion Alert System for around $60. It has outside lights that come on and an indoor, wireless, doorbell sound. Number on box is SH-6040-WH.

“I try to keep the house locked at all times, but the noise of the shower covers up most external sounds.”

I try to keep a reasonable perspective on these things. How many times has your house been broken into? How many times has your neighbors homes been broken into? If the answer is not many, I dont worry about arming myself for the 15 minutes a day I’m in the shower. If the answer is “all the time”, I’d get an alarm, a big dog, or better yet, I’d move to a better neighborhood.

This ole geezer uses high tech. On my farm, I am all fenced in with barbed wire, and have a driveway entry detector. In my shower I have an overhead light. I just hatched the idea of having the detector flash (turn of and on) the shower light if driveway entry occurs while showering. It will at times false detect from birds playing, etc. but this happens maybe twice a day so the chance of a false during a few minute shower is virtually nil.

Where there is a thread there is a solution!
