I, too, wondered where was Rush. Also where was the Greatest Singer In The World?

The whole opening was at once visually stunning and totally boring. I don't know how that happens.

actually I take that back. I know one aspect that made it boring: each piece/vignette went on FAR too long.

“The whole opening was at once visually stunning and totally boring. I don’t know how that happens.”

Haven’t you seen many movies in the last 20 years?

So much emphasis on “visual effects” with no (good) story. Especially since they got to play with computers.

It’s the same principle. Making it technically impressive doesn’t mean it gets the soul.

My take: I thought it was pretty good. However, as always, I have reservations/critiques:

1-Indian emphasis. I don’t mind having the sub-cultures in there; it’s interesting and part of the whole. But not only was there quite a bit of lingering on this issue, but what was with the “PLEASE *WELCOME* THE LOCAL TRIBES!” WELCOME? They’re already there! The host country is supposed to welcome OUTSIDERS! Not outsiders welcome a few people from the inside? Give me a break.
2-The punk fiddlers. I wasn’t sure from Costas’ ravings what was going on - did this guy get drunk and have these visions of punkie fiddlers (at ONE bar)? Are they really that prominent to go on and on for I can’t count with them dancing and fiddling? I never knew about these people at all, much less that they were so important. (Never mind they struck me as weird exactly because real punks would NEVER do anything so nerdy as fiddling and - yikes - actual dancing!)
3-General long-windedness of many presentations, and in many cases not really adding to any story (the boy in the heather).
4-So many switch-offs inside the stadium with the flame; I know now it was to let them all light, but still, it was sort of chaotic.
5-Cauldron shaft malfunction - ‘nuff said.
6-Cauldron logistics. In the middle of the stadium, not up high. Are they going to use this stadium for events are not? I was wondering if they were going to leave this flame as is and waste a stadium. Then having another cauldron FAR away from the stadium apparently - that’s not even “high” that most in the city could see it (hark to Costas’ remarks inside)! It was no higher than in the stadium! Too much “ceremony” with 2 cauldrons, covering about a half hour of time from the stadium entrance.

Most of that stuff should be probated, especially the ring. He has no claim to anything that he was not specifically bequeathed in the will; he cannot presume what your parents might have done. I hope this is in probate court.

Too bad they don’t give of medals for hubris. Obama would OWN that!

OMG what a funny thread. I wonder if the Canadian socialists will award Obama a gold medal, for "what he might accomplish"

Actually, no I don’t watch movies much. :-) At least in part for that reason.

Great assessment.

I think it probably was a BIG mistake if they got rid of a section in order to focus more on the luger killed.

It made the whole thing really disjointed. The moment of silence was almost enough.

I, for one, appreciate that Celine Dion wasn’t “in the house”... I dunno, maybe it’s just crazy ‘ol me in my pre-menopausal state (and I know she’s the world’s most famous Canadian), but I just cringe when I see her and/or when she opens her mouth.

I agree with you, Lainie — I found the whole thing totally boring, but visually I enjoyed the entire show with the whales and the separation of the icebergs... Beautiful Imagery!

NBC said what — they’d be losing $200 to $250 million on the Games? Does that mean local affiliates have extra time to sell?

Bill Haslam (currently mayor of Knoxville, running for Governor) has run a couple of commercials on the NBC affiliate — I’m guessing the same ones might have run in Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, etc.

Here’s a wacky idea — if NBC has $200 to $250 million worth of unsold ad time — why don’t they just run fewer commercials? Yeah, let the local affiliates have a few extra spots, but if they’re definitely losing money, why not just bite the bullet all the way?

Yeah, I think there are local spots built into every half hour or so.....

I see we have more dribble coming out of Boob Costass’s mouth!!

I’m glad to see we are repeating the format or only seeing the top few competitors and copious amounts amounts of bob costas running his stupid mouth. I’ve noticed that the non-primetime coverage is much, much better.

Ha, just fast forwarded through 20 minutes of Bravo Sierra with absolutely NO event coverage.

Might have something to do with why they are losing 200M. I miss the days when ABC used to do it and do it right.

My tivo fast forward button is getting quite a workout while watching the “coverage’ from NBC which must mean Nothing But Commercials.
