Despite Netanyahu pressure, Russia defends Iran missile deal

On the eve of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Moscow, senior Russian security officials were speaking out on defense-related issues that have provoked tensions between the two countries.

An hour before Netanyahu's plane took off on Sunday, Russian officials said that Moscow sees no reason to delay the sale of the S-300, a powerful air-defense system, to Iran. In addition, on Friday, Russian intelligence officials leaked comments expressing their displeasure with plans by an Israeli firm to close a major arms deal with Georgia.

"There is a signed contract [for the S-300 missiles] which we must follow through on, but deliveries have not started yet," Vladimir Nazarov, deputy secretary of Russia's Security Council secretary, told Interfax news agency in an interview. "This deal is not restricted by any international sanctions, because we are talking about deliveries of an exclusively defensive weapon."

I wonder if Israel will attack before November and thereby give Dems a boost in the US midterm elections, after Obama goes through the motions of “acting tough.”

I don't see how they can wait that long. As a matter of fact, I don't see how they've waited THIS long.

How about what we did and we're doing? Sending weapons to Saudis who then filter them through to the Taliban and al quada. Or how about releasing terrorists to the saudis who “rehab” them straight back to the battlefields to kill more of our treasure?

Don't get me started. But think about this.

Not one Iranian was involved in 9-11-— most of the others were Saudis...who came here with the good graces of the State dept.

Isn’t this the same missile system that was suspected to have been aboard the Arctic Sea. The ship that was reportedly hijacked by someone (Israelis) and afterwards had its entire crew detain and sequestered in Moscow.

There never was a public reckoning on that incident. I kept looking for updates and developements, but it all faded away.

Looks like they’re going to try again and just force it through out in the open this time.

they were all Saudis I think. Sure. But that doesn’t mean we should sit back & let the iranian regime have nukes, defended by their russian missiles.

Ha’aretz is a leftist newspaper.

Contrast this article from the centrist Jerusalem Post:

“None of the missiles have been delivered, Russian officials say, although there have been no public explanations for the delay. Some observers suggest Russia is holding back on the missiles to persuade Iran to back off on its nuclear ambitions.”

and

“On Monday, Medvedev welcomed Netanyahu and said Russia regards Israel as more than an ordinary partner.”

Israel could do it using ICBMs with with nuclear or tungsten warheads. A follow up raid by 100 F-16Is and 25 F-15Is escorted by 40+ F-15Cs would be nice.
