Rubio's crowd: Liz Cheney, Matalin, Senor (so long, Charlie)
Politico ^ | 2-15-10 | Ben Smith

Marco Rubio's appeal to Washington's conservative and Republican establishment will be on display this Thursday at a fundraiser for him in the offices of the lobbying and consulting firm Navigators Global.

The $500-a-head event's hosts include former Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter Liz, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, former Bush Iraq spokesman Dan Senor, consultants Alex Castellanos and Phil Anderson, and former Reps. Vin Weber and J.C. Watts.

The honorary hosts of the event, which coincides with CPAC, are leading Hill conservatives, including Sens. Jim DeMint and Jim Inhofe, and Reps. Paul Ryan, Mike Pence, and Jeff Miller. Backing Rubio in the Florida Senate race is becoming a litmus test for conservatives.

Cesar Conda, who wrote recently of switching from Crist to Rubio, organized the event.

Seriously Crist may have some sort of skeleton in his closet like ex-Congressman Mark Foley did.

Rubio is probably the better choice when one thinks about that.

This young man with a nice head of dark hair versus a hack with white hair. Rubio will win and I like him.

Lot of Obama’s win can be chalked up to young and vigorous versus old bald white haired hack

Let’s hope Crist is crisp as toast and this guy gets elected. He looks like he could be a rising presidential star for conservatives in the future.

I live in Florida. Crist lost me before he was elected.

As Secretary of State Henry Kissinger once promised as he commenced an anecdote, "this story has the added advantage of being true."

Marco Rubio has the added advantage of being Hispanic.

I am temperamentally opposed supporting candidates because of their race and I have therefore opposed boomlet's for Colin Powell and the election of Michael Steele to party chair. But this opposition was grounded not in their race but in their politics and in their competence. I have often supported Alan Keyes on the facts.

Rubio is a certified and reliable conservative. We desperately need the Hispanic vote and Rubio offers a great springboard. We should elect him because he is a conservative and take his ethnicity as a bonus.

Rubio comes with yet another bonus: he is the most articulate and engaging conservative personality out there today, and I do not exclude Sarah Palin from that calculus.

Good points. Rubio is solid. He will be attacked by the left because he is a CONSERVATIVE Hispanic.

This article has one blatant lie and needs to be addressed.

RUBIO IS NOT BACKED BY THE REPUBLICAN ESTABLIMENT!

The DC elites, GOP/RNC whiney scumbags fully support Crist.

Well stated on all counts.

Colin Powell offends me because he thinks he is entitled. Michael Steele offends me because he carries a full deck of 52 race cards around with him. It amazes me that he can carry them, having such limp wrists. I lost a lot of respect for Bill Bennett when he started using Steele as a guest host.

The guest host thing with Steele didn’t last long and now Rick Santorum is the regular host on his Friday shows. Bennett got an earfull especially when Steele’s host talents were shown to be horribly condescending.

Rubio is the real deal and like other posters; Rubio would be well advised to stay the hell away from Matalin and the 14th Street gang. He is very well aware that he got to where he is without them and can function just as well keeping them at a distance. Mary and James are Progressives playing both sides of the battlefield only to enrigh themselves at our expense.

Mark Foley had a penchant for young boys.
Crist on the other hand likes gay bath houses and glory holes in park rest rooms.

I guess I knew that about Santorum vs. Steele, but I'd moved away from Bennett by then.

Agreed re. Matalin & Carvile. I do think that, sometimes, a politician has to be careful to keep certain people at arms length without alienating them totally.

Wife and I donated to Rubio early on and have long felt he was the real conservative deal.

They should keep Matalin away from Rubio. She is a jinx, if not a spy.
