A prominent conservative senator said that Washington political leaders should "be replaced" if they do not back a document of conservative principles signed Wednesday.
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) deemed it necessary that politicians endorse the Mount Vernon Statement, a document outlining a vision of "constitutional conservatism" backed by a number of right-wing activists.
"If our leaders cannot agree to the Mount Vernon Statement, they are part of the problem and should be replaced," DeMint tweeted.
The South Carolina senator has clashed multiple times with Republican leaders on how best to win in the 2010 midterm elections.
DeMint's Senate Conservatives Fund has backed several primary candidates who are running to the right of establishment Republican candidates, some of whom have been given the tacit backing of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC).
This is great!
DeMint is truly in a class of his own.
I wonder if the Country would be better served with DeMint leading the Senate or as CIC. It’s not a question of limitations, but of maximum effectiveness.
It's true that Nancy Pelosi, Dennis Kucinich and Cynthia McKinney wouldn't sign it, but in their cases, who cares??
I actually think this is pretty good. If for nothing else, you can hold a legislator’s actions up to this as a rubric and say, “Consistent?”
Voting for amnesty, for example, or for limiting campaign speech, or medicare part B, stimulus, health care bill, etc.
This even works for ‘moderates’.
Is there room for a new ‘Contract’? I’d say definitely.
I’m not sure anyone has any idea what to do next right now. I haven’t heard it communicated by anyone beside Palin, and I’m not a rabid Palin fan. Even Rush hasn’t set out some sort of ‘X step plan’ to fixing the US.
Our politicians seem to forget about limited government once they are elected.
Even these core principles will cause problems with a lot of "social conservatives" that with for big government to enforce issues of morality, over which the Federal Government should usually have no authority and States should address with great caution.
DeMint leading the Senate would certainly be a step up from the guy we have now.
Putting a bead on lil’ Mikey Tinsel.
Well done.
The unholy RINO trinity!! I totally concur Frantzie and we can add the whole RNC staff and the Senate if they do not get on board
This is just a bunch of crap to fool the people.

Hope. Change.
It’s a good framework for the ultimate goal. But we need action items for reform towards the goal.
He that lives on hope will die fasting -Poor Richard’s Almanack
If it’s intended as a framework for specific policy proposals then I’m fine with it, but I fear it will be used as an excuse for RINOs to claim “conservative” credentials without having to commit themselves to specific conservative policy initiatives.
That would not be alright with me either. I want to see plans with action items to restore freedom and shrink the government and it’s debt.
