It may be that so many people acquired their vocabulary from TV instead of books. How many would recognize "melee" if they saw it in print? How many know that the Malays are an ethnic group?
I know a retired HS teacher who is always bragging about modern education. My impression of him is that his education is very narrow. I'm afraid he is typical.
