New controversy brewing over an old bill signed into law by Rick Perry that allows illegal immigrants to attend Texas colleges at in-state tuition rates.
The bill signed into law in 2001 allows illegal immigrants to get in-state tuition so long as they intend to apply for permanent residency, but who's checking to make sure they go through with the process?
According to the governor during the last election-debate it's the Texas Education Agency, but Andy Kiesling with Texas Higher Education says that's not quite right. "There's no provision in the statute that requires follow up."
It's something that Alipac's William Gheen thinks is just part of a hidden movement to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants.
"It's quite obvious that you've got some very powerful big business groups in Texas that love their illegal aliens and want more of them."
The governor's office recently issued a retraction of Perry's statement.
Every desk an illegal takes is one less diploma for an American taxpayer. Much like the presidential election, Texans don’t have much of a choice in the run for governor. It’s another vote for the least evil candidate.
Yeah? And if I enrolled, I’d have to pay out of state tuition. Jerks! But that’s ok, I’m supposed to just lie down and take it and be a milk cow for the leeches.
Easy - any out of staters who come to Texas for schooling should do the same thing. That way, it’s in-state tuition for EVERYONE!

Any conduct that encourages an Illegal Alien to remain in the country is “harboring”, which is a violation of The Immigration and Naturalization Act. USC 8 Sec 1324. Each violation is punishable by five years in prison.
I moved from Texas to New York 5 1/2 years ago. My son is a graduating senior here. He was BORN in Texas and will have to pay out of state tuition because he graduated from an out of state high school. His father still lives there and is paying property taxes there.
NOT ONE ILLEGAL should get instate tuition (OR A SEAT) before my Texas native son gets instate tuition!
I work in a post-secondary institution in Kansas where we also have the in-state tuition for illegals. The problem is after they spend 4-6 years in a college and graduate, they are still illegal and cannot work in the state. They sign off on a sheet of paper that says IF a procedure for them to become legal ever materializes, then they will pursue it. Spending thousands of dollars so someone can get trained for a job they cannot work in is ridiculous.
the reason they are illegals is because they don't have a basis for applying for permanent residency. If they would have had a basis, they would have applied already.
Did ya’ll see on Glenn Beck the other day where he tried to backtrack a little and say that Debra Medina is just all right with him.
I believe the requirement for in-state tuition is a year registered living in Texas. So alot of out-of-state people take a year or two of community college, then transfer to a Texas school as in-state. (I’ve lived here 11-12yrs, born in MO, and I qualify for in-state. At SMU anyways.)
But for others, they should be required to have a valid green card or citizenship to go to a state school. Be legally able to attend school/live in the US. Student visa. Period.
SMU is a private school - I hope you have lots of scholarship money! He is applied there and at UNT for music ed. MUSIC is a course of study for which you can’t go to a jr. college for a year.
You only have to be living in the state 90 days, I believe, to register to vote. I’ve paid property taxes in Texas most of my life and his father still lives there. There should be a way for him to slide in with in-state tuition!
(And this would be for ANY kid in his situation.)
As a reward for breaking our laws, there are those who want illegal aliens to receive reduced college tuition and take admission spots from our children. Outrageous.
Vote the incumbents out!
