A school board in Rhode Island has voted to fire all teachers at a struggling high school, a dramatic and controversial plan aimed at shoring up education in a poverty-ridden school district.
On Tuesday night, the board approved the plan by Frances Gallo, superintendent at Central Falls School District, to discharge 88 teachers at Central Falls High School.
The firings come over the district's concern that teachers refused to spend more time with students to improve test scores.

88 job openings!
That’s how you deal with an unreasonable union mentality.
Reagan had it right.
thought you cant fire unionites
Before jumping to conclusions, I’d like to know what was being demanded of the teachers. How many extra hours? Willing students, or are the teachers taking the fall for a bunch of street hoodlums and uncooperative families? Where is the school located? Were they being asked to tutor at night in a high crime neighborhood?
Need more info here.
Teachers can’t teach those unwilling to learn.
The teachers fired themselves by refusing to agree to six very reasonable conditions of the administration, the most demanding of which was a 25 minute increase in their already breathtakingly short workday.
Sanity 1, Union Thugs 0. Any others want to play?
... for how long? I’m betting they ALL get re-hired... any takers?
Nice.

MAKE THAT ALL TEACHERS NATIONWIDE AND SOMETHING GOOD WILL HAVE BEEN DONE!!!
The superintendant of education wanted an addition 25 minutes per day plus she wanted the teachers to occassionally eat lunch in the cafetria (rostered duty?), nothing that sounds too onerous.
Got a feeling a judge will decide how this plays out. If she’s successful, the replacements are definitely going to be results oriented.
While not a teacher, I woulda preferred even a large cut in hours over a complete layoff.
Going on one year of the change for me (emp. to unemp.)
As any stupid liberal would do, overplay their hand. Best guess 90-10 voted for Obama.
“Teachers cant teach those unwilling to learn.” Absolutely true.....but in that case, there’s no need for the teachers is there. If the parents don’t care and the students don’t care, why keep the teachers on the pay roll?
Shh... don't let anyone know some of us teachers are conservatives. It's highly classified. Even most Freepers are oblivious.
Dare I say that these job losses were unexpected?
Don't lump us all into this.
