There may have been a few gas pedals that got stuck in the floor mat, but I would bet that nearly all these crashes were caused by driver error.

“Driver error” sounds so NTSB ~ that’s why I think more of the problem arose out of a problem at the parts manufacturer than the customers.

The problem that's reported is stuck accelerator, not bad floor mat. However, the floor mat idea took currency and was evaluated.

The bad floor mat argument sounds so much like a car salesman's pitch it probably needed to be rejected out of hand.

Toyota's argument was that insufficient clearances had been made on the floor peddle itself so after a little wear and tear and dirt an incident was bound to happen.

The Democrats want to move on to the electronics since they figure it's pretty much what happens to their TV remotes after they eat a bowl of popcorn and drink some beer.
