You’re right. Although, one too can argue that it’s been also the economics (not just politics) that has kept many Western nations from taking * make or break* action(s), including crippling sanctions against IRI, so far. It’s been 31 yrs.
Should the West take crippling sanctions (what exactly are those proposed crippling sanctions, btw?) against IRI and IRGC for example, which is now very much an integral part of Iranian econcomy, Globally, don’t you think others including Russia, China, parts of S. America, certain other nations in the South East Asia, all inclusive, would replace Western interests as trading partners and/or increase their economic/business deals with Iran?
Your continued emphasis on economics certainly can’t be discounted.
But to suggest that IRI will be only and primarily brought down by economics is pie in the sky, and certainly not sustainable, short or long term. IRI, unlike USSR, does not run on a communist economic system.
